Mike Pennachi talked about this a bit when he was here, but it's nice to see different sources for setup. I'm considering it for our department when the Solar Winds license is up for renewal. I've heard a lot of good things about Drobo - http://www.drobo.com. It's an appliance that really does a good job, especially in the tricky area of increasing drive sizes. Reportedly, a Drobo handles this elegantly by just removing a drive and inserting a drive of larger capacity. Do this one at a time, and when you have enough drives of the larger size, you have more aggregated storage. That's tricky as hell to do on lesser systems. For FreeNAS, check out - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeNAS Revision 3 did a couple of good shows on the subject of building your own: http://revision3.com/systm/freenas http://revision3.com/systm/unraid (saw this one, and it was pretty good). One piece of advice - if you RAID or mirror drives, don't use multiples of drives from the same lot - their deaths tend to cluster together, so you might end up with more than one failure before you can replace and restripe.
