Free Wireshark training with a shot at a free Wi-Spy DBx! *27 July 2009 ? *Laura Chappell--networking expert and long-time Wi-Spy fan--is putting on a free Wireshark webinar this Thursday at 12:00 PDT. This is a great opportunity as Laura's classes usually go for $99 and are incredibly informative (as well as fun and entertaining) and will help you get started with Wireshark, the legendary open source protocol analysis software. Click hereto sign up. Plus, we (MetaGeek) will be giving out a few Wi-Spy DBx'sduring the class. At the beginning of the webinar Laura will put up a slide with instructions on how to get your shot at one of the free DBx's. It will involve Twitter, so if you want a shot it might be a good idea to get an account set up... that is, if you're not already a Twitter fiend :-). *A word of warning:* Laura's webinars are incredibly popular and fill up very fast. Close to 2,000 people are expected to sign up, but only 1,000 people will be able to login, so plan ahead (and login early) to ensure a spot...and get a chance at one of the three Wi-Spy DBx's up for grabs. Crawley | soundtraining.net Date: Fri, Jul 31, 2009 at 7:17 AM Subject: Brandon: top 10 Cisco commands and workshop calendar To: Brandon Fouts "Computers are incredibly fast, accurate and stupid. Humans beings are incredibly slow, inaccurate and brilliant. Together they are powerful beyond imagination." -- Albert Einstein Dear Brandon, We've moved our newsletter to new software with this issue. If you're interested, we'd been using PHPList . Now, we're using Acajoom . PHPList is outstanding software, but we wanted the integration benefits of Acajoom which is a Joomlaextension. It should make it much easier for you to manage your preferences. It's possible, because of the move, that you're hearing from me for the first time. If you have any questions or comments, please let me know. We've also combined our two monthly newsletters into a single newsletter starting with this issue. That means I'll be visiting your inbox only once per month with commentary, tips, and a workshop calendar in a single email. Finally, we've dropped the graphics to make it easier for you to read our newsletter on mobile devices. I hope these changes work better for you. In this issue, along with our workshop calendar, I thought I'd share my top ten favorite Cisco commands. These are commands that I either use a lot or find very helpful. Let me know what you think. 1. *logging synchronous*. Apply this command to your console or vty lines to have the device return to a prompt after displaying console messages. 2. *no ip domain-lookup*. Apply this command in configuration mode to prevent the device from trying a DNS name lookup when you fat-finger a command. 3. *show ip interface brief*. This command gives a quick summary of the configuration and state of your interfaces. 4. *filtering output*: show run | include show run | begin show run | exclude show run | section These commands are much like the Unix/Linux command "grep" in that they filter output. For example, if I want to only look at interface-related output in the "show run" command, I could enter "show run | section interface". If I want to only see configuration commands that inlcude the string IP address", I could enter "show run | include ip address. 5. *show ip route*. This is the first command I use when I'm troubleshooting routing issues. It tells me what routes the router knows. >From that point, I can then begin other troubleshooting such as FTFW ("Follow the freakin' wire") or checking other configuration issues. 6. *show version*. I don't use this one often, but it is a very handy way to know what you're working with in terms of hardware and software. 7. *do*. This is not an issue on an ASA, but it's very frustrating on a router to have to exit out to privileged mode to execute commands like "show run". Suppose you're in config mode or router mode and you want to check the running config. Just enter "do show run" and the router will happily spew its running config for you. (You do want your router to be happy, don't you?) 8. *terminal monitor*. Most of the time, we manage our devices remotely using SSH. (You're not really still using Telnet, are you?) The "terminal monitor" command tells the device to display console messages such as debugging information when you're in a remote session instead of logged in via a serial console cable. 9. *?* Realistically, the question mark is far and away the most-used Cisco command. It gives you command options, possible ways to complete a text string, and options for modifying a command. The question mark is to Cisco-land what Google is to the Internet. 10. *exec-timeout 0 0*. Don't use this command on a production device, but in a lab it's a great tool. It keeps your session from timing out. Use it in line console or line vty modes. 11. *wr*. Okay, I know I said this was my top ten list, but are you really going to complain about a bonus command for no extra cost? I didn't think so. In the old IOS days, instead of "copy" you would use "write". For example, today when you want to save the running config to NVRAM, you might use the command "copy running-config startup-config" (abbreviated "copy ru st"). In the old days, you could just enter "wr" (short for "write memory") and it would do the same thing. Guess what? The good old days live on, because you can still use "wr" to save your running config to your startup-config. Why does Cisco still support this very old command? I'm not sure, but my guess is they'd have a serious rebellion on their hands if they ever tried to drop it. John Chambers, are you listening??? Let me know some of your favorite Cisco commands. OES 1 is based on an antiquated version of LInux (SLES 9.3) which, if you also use the platform for other things (we do) then you will struggle when these other things need later versions of stuff. There are many fixes in OES2 that will never be in OES1, and support IS a major consideration for us. Finally one key reason is that OES2 is 64 bit, which allows it take advantage of your 64 bit hardware. But trust me, OES 2 is much much better that OES 1, and SP1 further improves on this. -- AlanP -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= www.psnug.org Puget Sound Network Users Group Building Technical Skills Through Teamwork And Education. Starting in July, a new coalition of technology industry companies, organizations, and academic institutions will be actively promoting one sure way of cutting IT costs: using open source software and open technology solutions. Open Source for America is a group of more than 50 organizations with the primary mission of "the promotion of open source software in the US Federal government arena." http://linux.com/news/enterprise/biz-enterprise/29699-open-source-for-america-promotes-foss-for-government ==> Telco Planning Joins Linux Foundation <== The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, today announced that Telco Planning has joined the organization. Telco Planning provides consulting services to network operators that encompass technology evaluation, business plan modeling, network design, integration and installation. ?Telco Planning has a long history of participating in the evolution of Carrier Grade Linux and being a conduit between vendors and carriers,? said Amanda McPherson, vice president of marketing and developer programs, The Linux Foundation. ?Their expertise will be an important contribution to the Linux Foundation and all of its members as Linux becomes even more pervasive in network environments.? http://www.linuxfoundation.org/news-media/announcements/2009/08/telco-planning-joins-linux-foundation ==> LinuxCon Keynote Speaker Garbee Interviewed <== As LinuxCon moves closer, we've been talking to the keynote speakers for the event, to get a sense of what their message to attendees will be and to give attendees a better sense of where the message is coming from. Next up in our series of interviews is Bdale Garbee, Chief Technologist for Open Source and Linux at Hewlett-Packard. Garbee is a steady fixture in the Linux community, known for his work at HP as well as Debian Project Leader. His keynote "The Freedom to Collaborate," will delve into innovation from open source and how to keep that innovation alive. http://linux.com/news/featured-blogs/168-brian-proffitt/33998-linuxcon-when-open-source-is-not-enough For more information about LinuxCon, visit http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/linuxcon To register, visit http://events.linuxfoundation.org/component/registrationpro/?func=details&did=1 ==> Linux Foundation in the News <== ChannelWeb: Microsoft Admits That Linux Desktop Elephant Exists In the 10-K, Microsoft also said Linux is gaining acceptance in emerging markets due to cost pressures on PC makers that have fueled the rise of lower-price PC form factors, i.e. netbooks. Particularly telling was Microsoft mentioning that Hewlett-Packard and Intel -- two of its closest industry partners -- have been "actively working with alternative Linux-based operating systems." HP sells Linux servers, notebooks and netbooks, and Intel has played a leading role in Moblin, an open source application stack for Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs), netbooks and nettops that is now being run by the Linux Foundation. (http://www.crn.com/software/219100164) The Register: Linux Foundation Urges Fans to Sign Up to Visa Credit Card The Linux Foundation hopes to raise cash by branding a Visa card with its cutesy Tux mascot. Executive director of the org, Jim Zemlin, said people can carry "Tux in their pocket" to show their support for Linux. (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/07/28/linux_foundation_tux_visa/) Computerworld: Group to Push Open Source in U.S. Government Members of the Open Source For America coalition, which launched Wednesday, include Google, The Linux Foundation, the Mozilla and Debian projects, Oracle, Sun Microsystems, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). The coalition's goal is not to convince the U.S. government to favor open-source software over proprietary code, but to give open source an equal chance to win government contracts, said Tom Rabon, executive vice president for corporate affairs at Red Hat. In recent years, some open-source groups, particularly outside the U.S., have pushed governments to mandate open-source software instead of using software from U.S.-based Microsoft. ( http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9135797/Group_to_push_open_source_in_U.S._government ) Web Worker Daily: In the Market for a Netbook? Watch the OS Developments There has also been much hubbub surrounding Linux-based netbooks. While it may not be immediately apparent, both the Intel-backed Moblin operating system and Google?s upcoming Chrome OS are based on Linux. Intel has handed the keys to Moblin over to The Linux Foundation, and it?s being squarely aimed at netbooks. There?s a good chance that Moblin-based netbooks will arrive by the end of the year. Moblin is getting notice for its very fast boot times and its performance, and because it?s an open-source operating system, it may arrive in ultra-inexpensive netbooks. If you aren?t planning to get a netbook for a few months, it?s worth keeping on your radar. ( http://webworkerdaily.com/2009/08/11/in-the-market-for-a-netbook-watch-the-os-developments/ ) The Register: Microsoft: GPL Violation Didn't Drive Linux Donation Leaders of the Linux community, meanwhile, continue to express their support for the code drop itself. Linux Foundation executive director Jim Zemlin, in conversation with The Reg at OSCON, called it "good behavior we want to encourage. I look at the fact Microsoft not so long ago said the GPL was terrible and open-source software is a cancer, and now it's part of the process. I see that as good, it's good for Linux that the tide has definitely turned." (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/07/24/ramji_defends_gpl_drop/) IT World: What's "Linux on the Desktop" Mean, When We Don't Know What a Desktop Is, Anymore? At last week's Open Source Convention, the role of identifying the major Linux trends and challenges was given to Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation. First, there's much to cheer about in the Linux and open source communities, Zemlin said, in every venue from mobile to high-performance computing. "Today, in the modern world, everyone uses Linux multiple times a day, even if they don't know it," he said. The economy is benefiting open source because of cost reasons; it's expanding and accelerating existing trends. Even Microsoft is actively participating in Linux, and attending OSCON. ( http://www.itworld.com/open-source/72634/whats-linux-desktop-mean-when-we-dont-know-what-desktop-anymore ) ==> From the Director <== Sometimes you need to hit rock bottom before you can get the help you need. IDC acted as an ?interventionist? today publishing a new report showing how open source is growing in the down economy. The study released today shows, ?worldwide revenue from open source software will grow at a 22.4% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) to reach $8.1 billion by 2013. The PowerPC architecture has always had some serious performance advantages over Intel - several years ago distributed projects like SETI were seeing 5-10 times the workload from power macs than comparable intel machines because they were optimized for floating point operations. However raw number crunching is seldom an issue; more often it's a matter of moving large chunks of data around and simple integer math, so the advantages are less obvious. Still useful to remember in the rush to single source everything....
