I thought I would post some information here in case there were others wondering. GWAVACon San Diego Free passes are now sold out. If you wish to attend, the cost is $795 per person. The GWAVACon Marriott Conference hotel is also sold out. You can visit http://www.gwavacon.com/na/san_diego_book_hotel_2008.php to find out information about the hotels that are across the street. GWAVACon Shuttle service is being provided by Blue Shuttle. There is contact information on the GWAVACon website at http://www.gwavacon.com/na/supershuttle_Information.php One way ticket is $25, but if there are more than one GWAVACon attendee on the shuttle, the second price drops to $7. You have to register online to take advantage of this. Going back to the airport will be a lot easier since there will be a lot of people going together. BTW, a taxi is $60 one way. Currently the registration and total attendance is just shy of 500. This is going to be a really big event. Also, for those who can't attend, we will be broadcasting GWAVACon Live on GWAVA TV. Information will be available soon on the GWAVA and GWAVACon websites. I look forward to seeing everyone from the list who will be in attendance. This is a good thing for MS Windows' overall security, and might one day provide real, effective privilege separation. It has taken a long time, though, in large part because MS Windows grew out of DOS ? an intrinsically single-user (and single-tasking) system ? and Microsoft has been loath to just throw out the entire system design to start over the way Apple did with MacOS X. There is surely little, if any, original DOS code still extant in MS Windows Vista, but the requirements of backward compatibility and the slow evolution of MS Windows over the years have ensured that, to some extent, user authentication is still a bolted-on security feature ? or welded-on, perhaps, after so many years of increased integration. read the full story: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/security/?p=376&tag=nl.e036 -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= www.psnug.org Puget Sound Network Users Group Building Technical Skills Through Teamwork And Education. Generally, the laser diodes at the heart of such technology are formed from bulk crystals of GaN. *Matsubara et al.* (p. 445, published online 20 December) now show that photonic crystal technology, already demonstrated for surface-emitting lasers at infrared wavelengths, can be scaled down to emit in the blue-violet regime. The possibility to engineer the emission wavelength and polarization mode may enable even higher optical storage densities. So I guess our planning horizon is still only about 3 years - right? ____________________________________________ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray - some history The first consumer devices were in stores on April 10, 2003 . This device was the Sony BDZ-S77; a BD-RE recorder that was only made available in Japan. The recommended price was US$3800.[10] However, there was no standard for pre-recorded video (BD-ROM) and no movies were released for this player. The Blu-ray Disc standard was still years away, since a new and secure DRMsystem was needed before Hollywood studios would accept it, not wanting to repeat the failure of the Content Scramble Systemfor DVDs. 4th quarter 2007 Blu-ray DVDs started shipping - you can read details from above wikipedia URL. -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= www.psnug.org Puget Sound Network Users Group Building Technical Skills Through Teamwork And Education. Major developments and milestones for ODF in 2007 included: *The Netherlands and South Africa adopted policies requiring ODF's use by government agencies, joining ten other countries that had already done so. *ODF software support grew rapidly to include over 40 applications, with more than a dozen announcements of new or improved support during the months of September and October alone. *The OASIS OpenDocument Technical Committee, which maintains the ODF specification, reached consensus about extensible metadata for the upcoming ODF v1.2 specification, which among these and many other new features will come with digital-signature support. A first draft of the spreadsheet formula specification that will also become a part of ODF v1.2. *Accessibility-related improvements were incorporated into ODF v1.1, allowing ODF to meet or exceed the accessibility features of any other office document format. http://www.odfalliance.org/resources/AnnualReport2007.pdf ----------------------------------------------------------------- ALLIANCE RESPONSE TO ECMA'S PROPOSED DISPOSITION OF COMMENTS ON OOXML ISO fast-track procedures provide the submitter of a proposed standard, in this case Ecma, the opportunity to address the problems that national standards bodies (NBs) identified in the hope of persuading them to change their vote. My shot at your questions: 1) Full text search within DMS of PDF files doesn't actually happen, despite some of the docs claiming it does - this is probably this single biggest bugbear for many DMS users, because otherwise the full text search is massively useful - our workaround is to store most PDFs on an OEs server with Search server running, which DOES full text index PDFs - this is acceptable because for us PDFs are mainly static reference docs, rather than active docs 2) we have never used archiving - I am with Grgg on this, we keep all docs in the libraries as a searchable knowledge pool 3) As Taryn we set up 3 or 4 libraries on a departmental basis, then use sharing rights to control access within libraries 4) In my experience Office 2003 is the only version close to 100% straightforward (Excel excepted) - Office XP went south after GW7 ir1 last December (see forums) - and I haven't got Office 2007 or OpenOffice.org to work without having to do backflips either. I have never tried WordPerfect Office, so cannot comment on that. 5) the forums are for SUPPORT so tend to be addressed by people with PROBLEMS, when I don't have a problem (99.99% of the time) I don't post to the forums....... I have one last comment on storage location, specifically as Taryn suggested storage OFF the Post Office...... now this used to be the defacto "best practice" for the exact reasons stated, however developments in the past few years have rather changed this, and my personal painful experience..... Firstly, storage has become MUCH less expensive, so you don't need to think about it as the same sort of limitation as it was 10 years ago when I set up our libraries. Secondly afaik if you ever want to cluster GW you MUST have the libraries ON the POA to be successful. Thirdly, if you wish to use Reload and have it handle the libraries automatically for you they MUST be ON the POA to be successful. There isn't a nice way of moving thousands of documents from OFF to ON library storage should either of these two aspects become important........ as mentioned, planning is everything....... but it is worth it Best of luck Simon >>> On 26 January 2008 at 08:35, in message < 479B7D61.4779.0076.3 at silverdane.com>, "Taryn Lazarus" < Taryn.Lazarus at silverdane.com> wrote: LOVE GroupWise DMS!!!! Could NOT live without it! Only complaint is that it is not high on the development road map agenda so new features are accidental rather than intended. I have been involved in loads of DMS implementations over the years. The biggest issue that any of the clients I have worked with have had is end user training. This is ESSENTIAL if you want to have a successful implementation, as DMS requires a slight mindset adjustment, but hey we can all do with one of those every now and then. Let me address your questions: 1) All parts of GroupWise DMS do what they were intended to do and more. However there are a few challenges- for example DMS does not yet out of the box work with Microsoft Office 2007 nor Open Office without using the check-in check-out functionality. (If you are happy to use this then sweet) Custom development can be done to make this work and there are a few places who have done this already, not sure if they are selling it as licensed product though. 2) The archiving component can be done using off site archiving. I appreciate Gregg's comments, but I haven't found that to be an issue if the Libraries aren't stored under the post office. Store the documents separately because you don't want your post office store to get enormous and your document store to get enormous and end up with an out of control disk situation.....which is probably why you are talking about archiving right? The key here, is plan how you will archive documents now. Don't wait until you want to archive them. And get a good understanding of how the archiving works. 3) Definitely don't create a library per project. We commonly implemented libraries for security. IE in any given organisation we might have a Management Library, a Finance Library, an HR Library and an Organisational Library. Think of access to documents and security like keys to a room in a building. You need the key to the building (the library) a key to get you to the right floor (the document) and then a key to let you into the room (the particular version) With all keys you have access. With only two- you are stuck and don't have rights. Library security is set by administrators and then document and version security set by users and librarians. Gregg's idea of looking at the custom properties page and working out the metadata that you would like to store against each item is a good one. 4) Office XP Works well. 2007 doesn't work without customisation, neither does Open Office. Although you could do check in and check out, but it is honestly painful. Open Office is much much cheaper, but then you have the retraining issue of staff- but the cost benefits might be worth it. I know that Brainstorm Inc do awesome quick start training cards and computer based training for these products. 5) The discontented are discontent due to poor planning, and no investment in training, not to mention too lazy to read the documentation. The documentation is excellent. The security is excellent. Space savings are to be had, don't know how but Novell manage to compress the files to a smaller size very nicely. I cannot stress enough that planning is critical and user education is critical. Your DMS System will fail without these two things. I created a forged email using a capability available to me in our internal messaging system, basically a function that enables me to reuse the header of an email that was sent to me while replacing the email's content. I was then able to type the text I wanted and the email appeared as being genuine. * That is an extraordinary statement in and of itself and should sound the alarm for any organization that depends on emails' contents for executing critical decisions. Basically, casual conversations asside, if you cannot tie an email's content to a verifiable origin, you shouldn't act on the contents. And while there are a few email authentication schemes around, it's important to note that few enable recipients to reliably tie a body to its real-world origin (i.e. a legally-formed company or actual individual) and much less tie headers' contents to a body, especially as header content changes greatly in transit. A decent email authentication mechanism should be robust enough to continue providing recipients with verifiable information even when some email parts might have changed. For example, it should allow the recipient to check the validity of the body's content even if the "to" or "from" or even "subject" fields may have changed in transit. http://blog.kryptiva.com/2008/01/why-strong-em-1.html -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= www.psnug.org Puget Sound Network Users Group Building Technical Skills Through Teamwork And Education. Our competitors have targeted this one product ? mandating one document format over others to harm Microsoft's profit stream." Perhaps it is a mere slip of the tongue that has Tsalis mixing up open source with open standards. There are good arguments for and against mandating open source in government ? protecting business models or profit streams should not be among them ? but open standards are a very different matter. Microsoft has said all along that OOXML will be just as open as OpenDocument Format (ODF). How, then, can adopting the latter "harm Microsoft's profit stream"? And since when has an open standard been "a product"? Tsilas is admitting, more explicitly than implicitly, that Microsoft's profit depends on it controlling standards and that OOXML is a product designed to do exactly that. The mask has slipped and the nature of this particular war is on display. http://news.zdnet.co.uk/leader/0,1000002982,39292519,00.htm?r=1?user_rating=1 PS - it is MS spec, NOT OOo spec. -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= www.psnug.org Puget Sound Network Users Group Building Technical Skills Through Teamwork And Education. With the initial public release in November of the XO Laptop to mass production. Limited fund raising event of the Give 1 Get 1 [2] program from November to December, created over 80,000 orders in 6 weeks. Which in turn started sending 'gift' XO Laptop first round installations into countries (and children's hands) such as *Mongolia, Haiti, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Cambodia,* and *Afghanistan. * Online resources for OLPC / XO Laptop is also growing quickly, with great overviews on http://laptop.org , and 5000+ pages of information on * http://wiki.laptop.org* including specific pages for support related questions via http://support.laptop.org . Huge growing XO Laptop presence in Seattle [3] and other Pacific Northwest areas, volunteer community based support and repair shops popping up in several locations throughout Washington and Oregon, and the rest of the nation. Exciting stuff to be sure, especially in the realm of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), XO Laptop focus is 100% open source [4] ! ! ! In respect to the* Linuxfest Northwest 2008 conference*, several things. . . . So far there has been enough presenters and volunteers stepping forward, that the LFNW event organizers have given a green light and background support for... o A specific OLPC / XO Laptop presentation track ! o A dedicated vendors table for OLPC information and XO Laptop demonstration o A specific dedicated room for presentations, discussions, and learning lab environment. o Special coordination with Robotics and Solar/alternative energy presentation tracks with locations nearby ! Several special and very active OLPC community supporters have confirmed attendance too. . . * Mel Chua (mchua) - http://wiki.laptop.org/go/User:Mchua OLPC Jam organizer [5], Google Summer of Code receiptent for 2007, XO Laptop repair shop coordinator, Wiki editor, IRC support, etc (A tip-of-the-hat to Candela Technologies Inc http://www.candelatech.com , for covering the costs to fly her in from the *eastcoast *area) * Seth Woodworth (isforinsects) - http://wiki.laptop.org/go/User:Sethwoodworth OLPC organizer of public documents/media, learning materials, images, and other resources, also developer, support volunteer. BTW, the interest by LFNW08 for OLPC/XO Laptop has also helped to create another OLPC Health Jam [6] event as part of the Health conference in Seattle ! (And hope to see the results of this event, presented at LFNW too ! ) We still have many *opportunities still available* for LFNW volunteers, and hoping to increase presence and awareness even further. * Presentations about OLPC / XO Laptop experiences * Implementation * Development * Hardware * Software * Personal experiences with developing countries and what can be done to help. * Alternative methods for powering equipment (solar, wind, generator, etc...) * A conference vendor to run a XS Server or centralized 'OLPC jabberd' server for special conference networking, mesh, or sharing demonstrations. * Help assist with learning lab environment, and presentations * Offering other items for the auction, or encourage vendors to exhibit ! Please visit the LinuxFest Northwest 2008, website for further information, or check out the starting OLPC wiki page for the latest.... ( http://wiki.laptop.org/go/LinuxFest_Northwest_2008 ) Especially, please *bring OLPC / XO Laptops* to the conference, to help demonstrate the power of mesh networking and sharing activities ! (Many free WiFi hotspots throughout Bellingham, and (likely) during the conference.... even several T-Mobile locations :) I am very excited to see this come to fruition, hope to see you and many XO Laptops there ! -Iain Davidson (aka ixo , on OLPC support-gang, irc #olpc-help , #olpc and email lists: grassroots, support-gang, developer, help etc.) p.s. That would make a great end-user topic because anybody considering a switch to Linux would feel more comfortable knowing that the same program ran on either. For this category of people, a side by side comparison of programs would be excellent, i.e. here's Office and here's OpenOffice. The topic would also be good for software developers. There have to be some Windows programmers who'd like to know what tools and processes are used to make cross-platform applications. I haven't used a Windows machine since 1994, but as a developer, I'd still be interested in what it takes to design a program that would work on Windows as well as Linux. The Opensource community has done a remarkable job of writing programs that run on Linux and perform similarly or the same as Windows apps. I don't know how well it has done writing new apps that run on either, but that seems to me a good way to infiltrate a Windows machine. At some point the Window's user has to ask why they are spending money on an upgrade when all their apps run on Linux. David Smead www.amplepower.com ------------------------------------- From: Jakob Perry Dave: At techtonic I plan to a presentation close to what you describe. I'll be using both windows and OSX to show off open source applications. Carl will then be showing them all running on linux. I think I'll be doing another presentation at linuxfest, but I could give presentation notes from techtonic to anyone who might want to do such a presentation at linuxfest. ~Jakob Perry JADE Microsystems japerry at jademicrosystems.com Cell: 360-739-6709 AIM: japerry007 ------------------------------ From: Mark Ashworth Dave Smead wrote: > I haven't used a Windows machine since 1994, but as a developer, I'd still be interested in what it takes to design a program that would work on Windows as well as Linux. Are you referring to a desktop application with a GUI? Write it in Java with a swing GUI. Looks and runs about the same on Windows and Linux. You have to remember to use the defined file path separator instead of / or \. I read somewhere that KDE was being ported to Windows. I haven't tried the KDE developer stuff in a few years. I would guess that GTK is somewhat portable. --Mark ------------------------------ From: "James Mason" I think that Gimp, Pidgin, and Inkscape demonstate that GTK is more than 'somewhat' portable. And yes, as of KDE 4.1, KDE as a DE, and individual KDE applications will run on Linux, Mac, or Windows. But personally, I still favor web apps (I don't like installers). Best I have seen/worked with personally is 20,000 for a new design and 15,000 for an existing design. I do know there are shops out there -on this list- that have stated they have 40,000+. GroupWise can scale in theory to hundreds of thousands based upon: -Hardware, -Design -User Access -Client type (WebAccess, POP/IMAP, GW Online) As for mailbox sizes -this is where you can see potential issues. I have seen small GW systems (1000 users) that have had 500 of those users with mailboxes of 20GB or so. They work fine. But as the mailbox grows from there -it can be an under performer. At 40-60GB mailboxes, you definitely will see some issues. Let's look at the FID and sizing theory for a moment -because this can be a # of users limiter. A FID is 3 digit Alphanumeric character that is specific per post office. Thats 36 characters per digit. 36x36x36=46656 possible FID's per post offices. Figure a max of about 256 post offices per domain -not 100% sure this is the limit -but I believe its close. Or their may not be a limit. 256 post offices x 46656 users per post office = 11,943,936 users per GW domain So in theory GW can scale. Now let's look at practice -which is what you should do: Post Office sizing suggests you look to access mode and contiguous access (number of users accessing 1 post office at 1 moment in time). See my article on Post Office sizing: http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/16094.html . A post office can have up to 46,656 users, but if it does and you only allow WebAccess to connect, AND they are 'light users' (email, some calendaring) then you can have roughly, 5000 users connecting at 1 moment in time. Consider that a max. The numbers come from Novell TIDs. But to be conservative, I would plan for 4000 users at 1 moment in time. Why? Well I would rather give the system 'head room'. And because I am conservative, I would plan for no more than 40,000 users per post office total -give yourself some room. Then the next question: How many post offices do you want to have per domain? 10 -or less. Why? Because the MTA will start to become too busy as your scale higher to handle in a timely manner email hand off to other domains. In the 4000 users accessing in 1 moment in time -from above- I would look to 5 post offices per domain. Why? Again being conservative and 5 post offices x 4000 users at 1 moment in time (20,000 users) -will likely see the MTA extremely busy. If they are light users -should be ok. If they are heavy users, I would do less. Heavy users are: shared folders, shared address books, proxy, doc. mgmt., etc. You can clearly see that would drain a system. Summary: 1 Domain with 5 post offices each with 40,000 users for a total of 200,000. Of those 200,000, 20,000 are accessing their email at 1 moment in time as light users. On 6 servers and 1 very large, powerful SAN -and maybe a cluster. Next up: WebAccess. This one is a bit more fuzzy. I have heard from strong Novell folks that the Web Server portion -WebAccess Application -can support up to 1000 users at 1 moment in time. That said, I have been told by customers that they do more than that. And on Linux -maybe it will scale even more. The WebAccess Agent -again I have heard 500 users accessing at 1 moment in time is optimal high-end, but customers have told me they run a lot more. Let's just say its 2000 per WebAccess Application and 1000 per WebAccess Agent -with light user access (email/calendar). You would need 10 WebAccess Applications and 20 WebAccess Agents to meet the 20,000 users accessing at 1 moment in time. Increase that for more head room to 15 and 25 respectively. Of course, you may find that you can get more users per application/agent. Summary: 25 servers needed to run WebAccess Application and Agents. Maybe less if you see higher performance at the App/Agent level. _______________ Not sure that gives you all you need but it does start to give a picture of how GroupWise can scale. A few assumptions are taken and you have to limit your users to just email/calendar without all the bells and whistles. And of course -if you need help designing a large 'hundreds of thousands of users' GroupWise system -give me a call I would LOVE the opportunity. :) -- Take Care. Gregg A. Both can have quite an impact on the performance of my piece of the puzzle. A welcome addition to the materials to help me learn about networking is Carla Schroder's Linux Networking Cookbook. This book is just right for the person like myself who enjoys learning by getting hands-on experience with the technology. The scope is wide and so someone with a great depth of networking experience may find that the treatments of each is a bit shallow. On the other hand, that wide scope means this book may hold something new, even for someone with some level of experience." -- JR Peck, Slashdot books.slashdot.org/books/08/01/16/1513207.shtml "In her book, Schroder delivers exactly what she promises: recipes for creating tasty and useful Linux and TCP/IP networking setups...Not only did Schroder clearly explain how to use RIP and OSPF, but she also set out in a way anyone could understand when it's better to use one over the other. She also did an excellent job of explaining one of the greatest pains ever faced by a Windows/Linux network administrator-getting Linux systems to work with Active Directory...Schroder writes in a very straightforward and clear manner. When things get complicated, and they always do in networking, she sticks to the main thread while pointing you toward other chapters or documents, as needed, if you find yourself sidetracked by another problem. I appreciate this. I've read too many technical books where, in trying to give you all the information you might need, the writer ends up losing me in the details...If what you want is a clear guide to using Linux open-source software to create solutions for such common network requirements as creating a Linux-based Wi-Fi access point or modem server, using SSH (Secure Shell) for network management or making a firewall, this book is for you. It is one of the best practical guides I have ever had the pleasure of reading on making real-world answers to Linux networking requirements. " -- Steven J.
