I know it's early to be writing about the July meeting but we wanted to let everyone know as soon as possible that there will NOT be a PSNUG meeting in July. It's going to be a Summer break from the usual routine. See you all in August when a couple of folks from Novacoast will be with us to talk about using MailScanner for spam/virus control on Linux. Take care. But it is really about being responsible for what you write and what you say. Compliance equates to transparency?being an open book?in your communications. Everyone knows that with today's technology, illegal, slanderous and clandestine activities carried out through business emails and texts create digital trails that can be proven, making those who would write or say these things think twice before they do it, especially if they know that they are being monitored. But what about transparency for everyone, including our children? Text messages sent to and from their own cell phones are often viewed as private conversations, sacrosanct - like a diary that parents should stay out of. This mentality flies in the face of responsible parenting. If this seems a bit like "big brother" to you, ask yourself if you would check your child's backpack or bedroom for drugs or talk to their teachers about their behavior in class. Chances are that your kids expect you to check up on them. Social networking sites started out for the young, but the trend spread and now their parents and grandparents have joined in. Everyone now understands that a picture or comment on Facebook is out there for the world to see. The world is changing. Some people will embrace the transparency world now; some will do it later and some never will. This is why we live in a free world. Raising children in an environment of transparency and responsibility for their actions helps them grow into responsible adults. Just as an organization demands accountability from its employees, parents should hold their children accountable for their actions and communications. If we, as a society, all live as though we expect our communications to be transparent, we can create a culture of accountability. A good place to start is by educating our children to be transparent in their texting, social networking and cell phone behaviors. *Integrating Text Messaging into your Open Records Policy* Are you able to quickly retrieve text message data for open records request? If not, join GWAVA, industry experts and peers in a panel discussion about this challenging topic. Learn how other government organizations are finding ways to archive text messages on a limited budget, keep them secure and still be able to quickly locate them for open records requests. Join GWAVA for this free seminar in New York (Oct. 12) and Washington DC (Oct. 27). According to a ruling by the US Supreme Court on June 17, 2010, text messages made by a public employee, even for personal use, are subject to open records requests. Join GWAVA, RIM, Verizon, government experts in compliance and your peers in this informative panel discussion on secure archiving and retrieval of text messages. Learn how other organizations like yours are finding ways to archive text messages on a limited budget, keep them secure and still be able to quickly locate them for open records requests. You may be surprised to find out that M+Archive uses SiS only on attachments, not on the message body itself. A GroupWise customer with 500 users and 3.5 million messages in M+Archive decided to switch to GWAVA Retain for its superior archiving abilities. To migrate the email archive, GWAVA personnel broke the existing M+Archive message store into four directories (folders). They ran the Retain migration utility against all four folders to create four migration threads. The migration process took five days. The results were surprising. The original M+Archive message store took 750GB. The newly migrated archive using Retain is only 100GB. If you want to use true single-instance storage and save money on your archives, switch to Retain. A good friend of mine is running the show. Should be awesome; I hope you can make it! Details follow, in his words... . . . . . Barcamp is a free, ad-hoc tech conference, where every attendee must present for at least 30 minutes on a topic of their choosing. Last year was our inaugural year, and we had a blast. ?Some of the highlights were the presentations of arduino-based garden watering systems, twitter in Iran, software entrepreneurship, and a homemade web-dev framework. I think the various user group members are the ideal attendees, and could really have a good time. ?I also plan on contacting a few of the other regional user groups. The event is at Suite 133 in downtown Tacoma, Saturday, Sept. 25th from 10am-3pm. ?Afterwards, we will likely go to Dorky's barcade (if it's open), or the hub. ? Sadly, the proposed solution will not work, and vixie has no idea why the it won't work. Allow me to explain: Reputation-based restriction systems work great in small groups. The Moral Majority has a stranglehold on much of small-town America because they instinctively know, and play the reputation card. Reputation matters in small groups because contacts are scarce. Every contact is important; contacts are the limiting dimension. In larger groups (and the Internet is as large as it gets) contacts are cheap. Someone doesn't like you? Dust them off, there are plenty more where that one came from! So (to give it a sex game context) girls in small towns tend towards at least showing a 'good girl' facade. In larger towns and cities enough contacts exist so that a reputation cannot follow, or if it does sufficient contacts exist such that a number will not be overly concerned with 'reputation'. The same issue exists with the Internet. We all have experience with users who want to connect to someone being blocked by filters. Safety, rules, our time be damned, they want that message now! Reputation, in a very real sense does not matter to these users. As the pool of contacts expands (or the likelihood of a contact leading to a transaction increases) the likelihood of reputation stopping either party of a transaction or exchange decreases. While we may argue until the cows come home about which OS is more or less secure, if you don't keep up with the latest versions and patches, no matter what you use it will be vulnerable. It is misplaced arrogance to assume any OS or application is above being vulnerable. Of course any time human beings are involved they can be the weakest link in the chain as well. But all software over time can become a security weak link if you don't keep up with the updates. So please update your applications and OS regularly. Teaching security is very much a hands on affair. Having a teaching aid like DVL around is a great resource for anyone teaching security or wanting to polish up their security chops. If you interested in this you should give it a whirl. Just make sure you don't use it in a real life production environment by mistake. -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= www.psnug.org Puget Sound Network Users Group see Calendar page for meetings Building Technical Skills Through Teamwork And Education. One of the challenges for Linux software developers is the need to compile software to run on various Linux platforms. Usually, this means that you need to have each of the distributions (in several versions!) you want to support, and build binary packages for each platform ? a labour-intensive process. While there are some standards like Linux Standards Base which should mitigate the situation, you usually still bump into non-standard names for dependencies and many other issues. Now there is a solution: the Build Service. http://news.opensuse.org/2010/09/20/easily-building-software-for-multipe-distributions-and-platforms/ and the www.psnug.org left side Navigation bar links to OBS The openSUSE Build Service is sponsored by Novell , AMD , IP Exchange and B1 Systems and builds about 100,000 packages from 25,000 users working on 15,000 different projects ? a workload keeping a whole mainframe park busy!
