While I think the website this year is 'neater' than in years past, it
still needs alot of work. Look at it from the standpoint of someone who
hasn't been involved in the process at all. They want to *quickly* find
the basics:

Date and Time
Location
Cost (since most conferences charge, free is the exception)
Session Schedule

The picture banner is pretty, but IMHO takes up space that would be
better served for the details of the fest. It still isn't obvious how to
get there (Logistics is a word that just doesn't jump out and say
'directions' to me) or a schedule of talks. I know we have a schedule
now, so it should be linked or embedded on the main site.

News items are still hard to find. You only see the last one on the main
page and after you have clicked on it there is no obvious way to see
other news items.

The Travel page has a nice map, but no address on it. What if you want
to lookup the location with your smartphone?

Some suggestions:

1. Hot link 'News and Announcements' to the news section
2. Change Logistics to 'Directions' and link it to the travel page
3. Put the address on the travel page
4. Link to the hotels, etc. from the travel page
5. Change session to schedule and link to it
6. 'It would be Nice(TM)' if the schedule and sessions had linkages
between them.


Like I said above, look at the website design from the standpoint of
someone who has seen a poster and wants to quickly get the details. Also
think about smartphone users who are on the road and who forgot to get
the exact address :)

The Tuesday April 20, 2010 Linux SIG meeting will be at at the Lakewood Fire
Station, 5000 Steilacoom Blvd SW, Lakewood, WA 98499 (by the water tower& on
the West side of the complex) in Training Room #2. Doors open by 6:30 PM for
setup. Super fast T-1internet connections available. The tentative plan is
to have the meeting conducted by Dick Meier and remotely by John Wickliffe
using videoconferencing with Skype and/or Gizmo (soon to be incorporated
into Google Talk) and Dimdim. We may also explore new capabilities of KDE4.
Since our Ireland trip got set back 2 weeks because of volcano ash, I will
be there.

TAPCUG Linux SIG and OLYMUG have been discussing bringing back a
Raincoast-like event in October but more financially modeled after LinuxFest
at Bellingham Technical College which is free to the public and happens
every year in April. For now we willcall it ComputerFestNorthwest. The key
is finding a free or low cost venue. Since this is a volunteer effort that
benefits the public, finding this free or low cost venue should not be
difficult.

Linux is quickly becomingthe preferred computeroperating system! Say good
bye to expensive proprietary operating systems, viruses, worms, trojans,
crashes, forced upgrades, infuriating pop-ups, repair bills & get a better,
complete Linux operating system with all the applications you need for a

In the enterprise environment, there are certain tools that are a necessity
for administrators. One such tool is the network monitor. In the
close-source, proprietary world you will find plenty of tools to handle this
task: Packettrap, GFI Max, Spiceworks. In the open source world - not so
much. But there is one particular tool that does monitor networks and does

Brown Paper Tickets (BPT) is a completely open source company. The
founder, Will Scott Jordan, wants to make it easy for people in
Seattle to get to the Fest. So BPT will be having a bus to Bellingham
if there's enough interest. (Unfortunately, the bus ain't gonna help
Will...he's stranded by the volcano in the UK.) The bus will come to
Bellingham on Saturday morning and return Sunday evening after the
Fest.

If you want to ride on the bus, please go to

Tickets are FREE, but they still need to be ordered. Click on "Begin
Order" in the box "I wish to buy tickets for this event." This will
give BPT information about how many people will catch the bus.

The ordering process will request email and phone number. Somebody
from BPT will be in contact by email prior to the event...and will
keep you posted by phone if the schedule on Saturday gets messed up.
The time is short; BPT wants to do whatever it takes to make this
work.

There will be a go/no-go decision at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 22nd
to give people time to find other transportation if the bus doesn't
go. BPT would really like to make this happen.

LinuxCon Keynotes Announced, Early Bird Reg Extended through Tomorrow

The Linux Foundation is pleased to announce the keynotes for this
year?s highly anticipated LinuxCon, taking place in Boston from August
10 to 12, 2010.  Just like LinuxCon, these keynotes represent leaders
from community, industry and end users.

Keynotes Include:
*Ravi Simhambhatla, vice president and chief information officer at
Virgin America. Simhambhatla will share how he sold the use of Linux
and open source to internal colleagues and how he and his teams are
maximizing it today.

*Eben Moglen, founding director of the Software Freedom Law Center
(SFLC). Moglen will discuss legal defense strategies for Linux and
open source software projects, including an update on GPLv2 and GPLv3
adoption.

*Stormy Peters, executive director of the GNOME Foundation. Peters
will explore how data is being stored and accessed in the cloud and
what that means for Linux and open source.

*Jeffrey S. Hammond, principal analyst, Forrester Research. Hammond
will present recent data that shows increased developer adoption of
open source platforms, frameworks and development processes as well as
heightened awareness by IT management of the benefits of a mixed
source development model.

*The Linux Kernel Roundtable Panel. The Linux Kernel Roundtable will
include a hand-selected group of top maintainers that include: James
Bottomley, Novell distinguished engineer and Linux Kernel maintainer
of the SCSI subsystem, the Linux Voyager port and the 53c700 driver;
Jon Corbet, Linux kernel developer and editor, Linux Weekly News
(LWN); Dave Jones, Fedora kernel maintainer; Chris Mason; director of
Linux kernel engineering at Oracle and creator of the btrfs file
system; and Ted Ts?o, North America?s first kernel developer and
fellow at Google.

LinuxCon brings together technical and business leadership for
unmatched opportunities to collaborate and learn about all matters
Linux. In its debut year (2009), the conference sold out and was host
for sessions that addressed developer, business and operations topics
in a lively and collaborative atmosphere.

our free Wireshark Jumpstarts always took place at 3:00am - 5:00am their

I just thought they'd enjoy starting their day off perusing some packets and
waking to IO graphs and TCP faults. Seems I was wrong.

The May 18, 2010 Linux SIG meeting will be at at the Lakewood Fire Station,
5000 Steilacoom Blvd SW, Lakewood, WA 98499 (by the water tower & on the
West side of the complex) in Training Room #2. Doors open by 6:30 PM for
setup. Super fast T-1internet connections available. Along with the normal
discussions, we will look at cloudcomputing, KDE4 capabilities, Linux video
conferencing and small Linux distros such as NimbleX, TinyCore and Slitaz.

TAPCUG Linux SIG and OLYMUG have been discussing bringing back a
Raincoast-like event in October but more financially modeled after LinuxFest
at Bellingham Technical College which is free to the public and happens
every year in April. For now we will call it ComputerFestNorthwest. The key
is finding a free or low cost venue. Since this is a volunteer effort that
benefits the public, finding this free or low cost venue should not be

Interesting - how statistics vary depending on how (and who) counting  
is conducted. Several reports had apple over 10% of US sales a year  
and a half ago, but it wasn't gartner.

I know we don't normally care about ads, but this seemed interesting -  
and one that most of us might miss. If you're like me you are expected

I've mentioned Geekbrief before - a great daily video podcast  
featuring tech tidbits. Brief 771 was particularly interesting,  
featuring a wi-fi microscope that can create it's own wireless network  
and can display video and stills on up to 253 devices simultaneously,  
iPads, iPod touch and iPhone. I can see huge advantages in education  
and field research.

think I need 3 browsers all running at the same time on openSUSE 11.1.

There was a big debate on the nwg list this week about business uses  
of the iPad, so I kept my eye open for more signs of this. (Note: I  
was involved in the debate, but not strictly as a fanboi.) The VMUG  
conference on thursday was a further eye-opener, as many booths  
featured iPad integration in one way or another. Generally these  
involved the iPad as remote screen through use of VNC, RDP and Citrix  
clients, but then it does look a lot like the electronic notepad  
yoeman Rand carried around for captain Kirk to sign in Star Treck.

Then I found the above link today as I was cleaning up mail. What is  
remarkable was that they had serious usage within 2 months of release,  
to say nothing of the xbox. The lines between 'legitimate business'  
and recreational toy continue to blur.

Q2: Netware and eDir were our best protection, weren't they?
Too small a group to attack.
Majority were "professionally managed".
Similar to mainframes? Do mainframes get attacked?

I would try to communicate to management, but they didn't seem to care or

In answer to your question, it's not enough to move away from windows.  
Using another uniform OS environment will simply lead to a similar  
attack using a vulnerability of the new OS.

An intelligent person who understands computing as well as military  
theory, epidemiology or environmental science should be able to see  
the problems inherent in the system. Single layer defenses are rather  
easy to breech; when an exploit is discovered all systems become  
vulnerable. The security community is slowly waking up to this  
reality, but they are late to the party and slow besides. It has been  
too easy to blame the victims for most attacks, especially when the  
victims bear some responsibility - keeping patches up to date and  
monitoring security logs, for example are low priority, commonly  
skipped components of security. And let's not forget that cross- 
platform attacks are now common - cross platform in the sense of  
multiple OSes being vulnerable. The vulnerability lives in a cross  
platform application (Flash) that can be exploited.

Anyway, netware/eDir were good protection, but to be honest they were  
dominant in a less connected world. Some of that protection was likely  
due to significant barriers to attack. Probably not most of that  
protection, but some of it. Still, in an environment where the servers  
are inherently protected from an exploit existing on workstations, and  
firewalls would need a third vulnerability, and switches a fourth  
total system failure becomes difficult. When you add in monitoring  
(security as well as system), decent firewalls, email filtering and  
antivirus it becomes very difficult to breach the system. Of course  
the environment is much more complex, but then you knew that, right?

A couple of systems have made the news recently that are targeting "scale
out" cloud workloads, and Linux is likely to be the OS of choice on these
systems. The SeaMicro SM10000 and the Quanta S2Q take different approaches,
but the theory is the same: Cram a lot of low-powered cores into a system to
handle workloads with massive amounts of small transactions. Sounds like a
job for Linux!
