(sorry, couldn't resist) Seriously, PSNUG has gone through a number of changes over the years but we are still in business. Our host moved last month to Kent (more like Maple Valley), so our meetings will too. Meetings vary depending on month, vendor and marketing, expect between 8 and about 20. Officially we are multi-vendor, but the reality is that we don't concentrate on NOS issues these days. The organization grew out of the original Novell user groups and we retain our NUI membership, so we do retain a certain fondness for Netware and SUSE. But it's a multi vendor world these days. Virtually everyone has Windows and some AD. Many of us have at least exposure to Apple products (hard to ignore such a big chunk of the market). At any given time we might discuss portal software, protocol analysis, switches, routers, SAN technology, Wireless options - anything in networking including the non-technical side. C'mon out and meet the guys. This month IS coincidentally a Novell presentation, but check our calendar for the past year or so ( http://psnug.org/calendar/calendar.html ) and you'll see what I mean. Novell CTO, Jeff Jaffe writes; Google Wave*

As we developed Pulse, Google announced their Wave project. We were stimulated by the possibilities. In the emerging real-time collaboration market there is a need for multiple providers and they need to federate. Google announced their Wave Federation Protocol (WFP) as an open approach to addressing this need. We asked why not federate? Open is key to Novell s value proposition! So we approached the Google team and they agreed! From this began a rapid embrace and technology collaboration to show two companies interoperating with different but related visions.

*Mixing the New with Enterprise Needs*

There are many exciting features in Pulse; focused on real-time communications and social networking. That is where we find the greatest amount of pure technical excitement.

The function will appeal to many stakeholders. Service providers will provide Pulse s real-time communications to their customers. Enterprises will leverage this as their new communications paradigm.

Additionally, Novell has a unique platform to introduce this. This is the existing platform of enterprise communications. We have a large group of customers with our GroupWise and OES products. Pulse adds value to this customer base bringing them into new paradigms of collaboration. In fact, we learn a great deal from our customer base in terms of enterprise requirements for cloud-based real-time communications.

This is what is truly unique about Pulse. It is secure. It is managed. Identity management. Provisioning. It is not only cool. And social. Real-time. Chat speed. Easy-to-use. But it will be a product that appeals to the enterprise.

Pulse is a very nifty piece of work. It could develop into a number of different tools depending on how users/developers make it play. Might actually be a piece of useful Web2.0 technology in the cloud. Hey that sounds a bit like Novell Teaming without the cloud. I asked the question about how Teaming & Pulse will play together of our speaker for our next meeting? "Pulse will offer real time collaboration in the cloud. Later in 2010, or early 2011, we plan to Pulse enable Teaming (GW is planned as well) to allow Teaming collaboration to be realtime enabled and be done outside the organization if needed. Teaming is on premise and for most people is becoming the knowledge repository for organizations." Teaming can already have participants inside and outside the organization. That's what it's supposed to do. With this, you will be able of federate (for lack of a better term) a Pulse/Wave group into your Teaming project. Won't matter what tool or where you are, your collaborating. It will be a blending of local and cloud. Oh and did you see that comment about the GroupWise integration? Pulse (therefore Google Wave) integration in GroupWise.... That's almost exciting ;+) Want to find out more? Come to the meeting. But is the FCC's version of Net Neutrality the real deal? Or is it a fake? Buried in the FCC's rules is a deeply problematic loophole. Open Internet principles, the FCC writes, "do not...apply to activities such as the unlawful distribution of copyrighted works." For years, the entertainment industry has used that innocent-sounding phrase -- "unlawful distribution of copyrighted works" -- to pressure Internet service providers around the world to act as copyright cops -- to surveil the Internet for supposed copyright violations, and then censor or punish the accused users. >From the beginning, a central goal of the Net Neutrality movement has been to prevent corporations from interfering with the Internet in this way -- so why does the FCC's version of Net Neutrality specifically allow them to do so? (Will Hill) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 15 Jan 2010 20:15:37 -0800 From: Will Hill Subject: [Taclug-General] Good explaination of system security. Here is an old but still true explanation of the all too obvious differences in GNU/Linux and Windows system security. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/10/22/security_report_windows_vs_linux/ It is interesting how in the intervening years Microsoft has tried to game the metrics and shout myths louder rather than try to fix the problems with rational system changes. Uptime numbers have been gamed by various fail over shemes and hiding Windows servers behind BSD and GNU/Linux. Microsoft has purchased large numbers of "parked domains" to inflate the apparent installed base of IIS both to promote their inefficient web server and to reduce an obvious counter to their "Linux is secure because no one runs it" lie. The repetition of "security in small numbers" or popularity myth is so pervasive that it even happens in places that should know better, like LUG lists. Yet Vista and Windows 7 retain most of the historic Windows problems. Barriers between users and the system have largely been built for digital restrictions management, to protect the financial security of large publishers at the cost of user control. In fact, Microsoft made some of the problems worse by integrating their poorly designed database. The article was written from an "open source" perspective and misses some important security benefits of software freedom. "free" and "freedom" are not mentioned and the critically important GNU project is mentioned only to differentiate Debian/GNU from the distribution's other branches. Fresh installs and ease of recovery are an important practical result of software freedom, specifically the freedom to share. Compare a net or custom image install to the loops and hoops non free software forced user through. ------------------------------ -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= www.psnug.org Puget Sound Network Users Group Building Technical Skills Through Teamwork And Education. Dear Brandon, Right now in the halls of Congress, Comcast lobbyists are schmoozing with lawmakers and arguing for the company?s takeover of NBC. But this merger doesn't add up: One of the worst companies in the country, plus one of the world's biggest producers of TV shows and motion pictures, equals higher prices and fewer choices for people like you. *Do the Math: Stop the Comcast Takeover of NBC* We've been up and down Capitol Hill, warning Congress that if they don't stop this deal, they'll be handing over more of our media to one big, bad company. But Comcast's huge army of lobbyists is swarming the Beltway, and we're way outnumbered. That's where you come in. *Help Us Reach Every Lawmaker in D.C.: Write Yours Now* Here's what our own calculus reveals about Comcast: - *Obscene profits.* Comcast is already raking it in. The company made $3 billion in profits in 2009. - *Overpaid CEO.* Comcast CEO Brian Roberts is one of America's most overpaid CEOs, taking home more than $40 million in compensation last year. - *Bad behavior.* Comcast has a long history of blocking union organizing, blocking Web traffic, and even blocking the public from hearings held to investigate its own Internet blocking. - *Tons of lobbying.* In the first nine months of 2009, Comcast spent a whopping $13.4 million on 98 lobbyists in Washington. Thankfully, for every Comcast lobbyist, there are thousands of people like you to set the record straight. *Tell Congress: Stand with the Public and Stop Comcast/NBC* Right now, Congress is adding it all up and deciding how to respond. There will be dinner sponsored by Silicon Mechanics. Check them out at http://www.siliconmechanics.com. As usual there will also be several CACert assurers present (http://www.cacert.org). The meeting will be at the Electrical Engineering building on the University of Washington Campus, aka EE1. Directions are linked to the EE Department's web site below. Parking is $6 after 4pm. Details are: Date: February 11th, 2010 Time: 7pm Place: EE1 Building (Electrical Engineering) Room 403 University of Washington Campus Directions: http://www.ee.washington.edu/about/contact.html Subject: An introduction to Wireshark for network monitoring Presenter: Scott McDermott Ever tried to figure out what the web server was really saying to the client? Maybe more importantly, what the client was really saying to one of your servers? Maybe you have a system that?s slow for no obvious reason or a network service that doesn?t seem to always work right. With a run of the mill laptop and Wireshark, you can gain insight into what?s actually happening on the ?wire? (or the ?wireless?). This talk will give you an introduction to Wireshark and the basics of how it can be used to investigate these problems that can otherwise be difficult to diagnose. The talk will also touch on some of the useful tools you can add to Wireshark to make it an even more useful tool. ????- Scott McDermott has been practicing system administration for 16 years. He has managed networks and systems ranging from 10Base2 networks with a couple SparcStations and DGUX boxen to 10Gig networks with 200 mixed servers. He currently works as a Network & System Administrator for the King County Library System, with an emphasis on the Network? portion of his job title. Wireshark is his tool of choice for diagnosing the problems that aren?t obviously DNS or permissions. Thanks in large part to the members of the ODF Alliance, government adoptions of ODF continued to grow steadily in 2009; even more governments made open standards-based solutions an essential feature of their eGovernment strategies. As a result, ODF is today an integral part of the global open movement. Looking forward, 2010 is shaping up to be another strong year for ODF, with additional government adoptions already taking place and several other major developments pending. To help our members and supporters continue to be engaged in the support of ODF and the efforts of the ODF Alliance, the following is a brief summary of the state of ODF and the outlook for 2010. ---------------------------------------- ODF GOVERNMENT ADOPTION Government adoption of ODF has continued at a steady pace. To date, Twenty-five governments ? seventeen national and 8 provincial ? have now adopted pro-ODF policies. These adoptions have occurred through laws, executive decisions, interoperability frameworks, or policy initiatives requiring or recommending the use of ODF between and among government agencies and in their interactions with the public Recent highlights include: -- Denmark Affirms Support for ODF -- 2010 began on a high note. As of 1 April 2011, governmental authorities in Denmark will be required to send and receive documents in formats designated in a list now including ODF. ODF is unique as the only editable document format listed in the agreement of the Danish Parliament. -- United Kingdom Reiterates Support for Open Standards, ODF -- In a refresh of the "Open Source, Open Standards and Software Re-Use: Government Action Plan," part of the Government?s ICT Strategy, the UK reiterated its support for open standards and ODF. -- Slovakia Mandates Use of ODF -- Slovakia approved amendments to a decree on the use of standards for information systems in the public administration. Government bodies in Slovakia must now be able to receive text documents in ODF, PDF 1.3, RTF and HTML. -- U.S. Open Government Directive -- U.S. federal government agencies will soon be required to make information available in open formats. According to the Open Government Directive issued by the Obama Administration on 8 December 2009. Under the Directive, each agency will be required to ?take prompt steps to expand access to information by making it available online in open formats ..... To the extent practicable and subject to valid restrictions, agencies should publish information online in an open format that can be retrieved, downloaded, indexed, and searched by commonly used web search applications.? -- Australian Task Force Endorses Open-Standards Approach -- Starting with the premise that "public-sector information is a national resource, and that releasing as much of it on as permissive terms as possible will maximize its economic and social value and reinforce a healthy democracy," the Australian Government 2.0 Task Force, in its report "Engage: Getting on with Government 2.0," has recommended that public-sector information should be free, based on open standards, easily discoverable, machine-readable and freely reusable. -- Hungary to Make Open Standards Mandatory -- The use of open standards in public-sector infrastructure will now be mandatory in Hungary. According to an amendment passed by the Hungarian Parliament on the law governing electronic public services (Act LX of 2009), open standards are now required in electronic communication conducted through the central governmental system between public administrative bodies, public utility companies, citizens, and private entities, who may comply on a voluntary basis. -- Spain to Propose Government-wide Standards for Interoperability -- Spain's national interoperability framework for eGovernment ("Esquema Nacional de Interoperabilidad en el ?mbito de la Administraci?n Electr?nica"), published 29 January 2010 by decree in the country?s official journal, encourages public administrations to use open standards and, where appropriate, standards that are widely used by citizens to ensure freedom of choice from competing technologies. It is recommended that documents and other electronic administrative services be made available via open standards under conditions satisfying the principle of technological neutrality. In summary through the beginning of 2010, "open formats" have become commonly-accepted wisdom in the public sector and, with it, the demand for and adoption of ODF continues to advance steadily. ---------------------------------------- ODF IMPLEMENTATION / APPLICATION SUPPORT ODF is widely implemented and available on all major platforms, including traditional desktop editors, as well as web and mobile applications. At this time, leading office suites support ODF as do an increasing number of mobile devices. The rise of ODF and demand for open formats has coincided--not coincidentally in our view--with a proliferation of new word-processor applications not seen since the PC was first introduced in the 1980s. Further, the proliferation of mobile devices, applications and platforms highlight the need for a standardized format for editable documents. Following is a list of recent highlights: -- ODF Achieves Near Universal Support -- As documented in the the February 2010 ODF Alliance newsletter, the last three months alone saw no fewer than 20 releases of new or improved ODF-supporting applications. They include a dramatic improvement in both the quality of existing support and its expansion into new areas with the emergence of ODF-supporting mobile device and web conferencing applications, document management systems, wiki editors, viewers, converters, accessibility tools (ODT-To-DAISY Digital Talking Book), database software, and programming libraries for developers. -- Beyond the Desktop ? ODF in the Cloud -- With the continued migration of word processing to the web, 2009 saw continued expansion and improvement in the quality of support in collaborative, web-based applications, including Google Docs, Adobe's Buzzword, Zoho Office Suite and Oracle's expected "Cloud Office" offering. -- ODF Support on Mobile Devices -- ODF is now supported on the Symbian, iPhone, Blackberry and Android mobile operating systems. With the proliferation of mobile devices, applications and platforms, the need for a standardized format for editable documents has never been greater. Despite this proliferation of new applications and devices, office file format lock-in remains the single strongest obstacle to real customer choice. The ODF-supporting community has, however, made enormous advances to address this problem. ---------------------------------------- ODF INNOVATION While ODF 1.1 resulted in a few minor changes to the specification itself to ensure that the needs of persons with disabilities were addressed, the first major update, ODF 1.2, offers a host of new performance-enhancing features. A further boost to innovation comes from the development of libraries now available for manipulating ODF content via programming languages such as Java, Python, C# and PHP. -- Towards Meaningful Documents -- The new metadata support in ODF 1.2 and the XForms support from ODF 1.0 make it simple to produce "smart" documents with advanced searchability and application interaction that can be integrated into electronic work-flows and web services. The metadata support in ODF 1.2 is based on the W3C standards RDF/XML and OWL which dramatically simplify and enable the reuse of ODF metadata by other applications. The RDF standard is at the core of the W3C's ?Semantic Web? project and central to initiatives in support of open government data. -- Open Formula -- Although spreadsheet formula for ODF 1.0 and 1.1 were implementation-defined, ODF implementations have nevertheless converged on increasingly interoperable spreadsheet formula, allowing users to choose from a range of ODF-supporting spreadsheet applications. ODF 1.2's proposed OpenFormula specification, based on actual spreadsheet practice and consensus from a large number of spreadsheet applications, promises to bring about a new level of interoperable spreadsheet support. -- Digital Signatures -- Up to now an application-specific feature, digital-signature support in ODF 1.2 is based upon the W3C XMLDSIG specification. -- ODF Toolkit Union Provides a Repository for ODF Programming Languages: The ODF Toolkit Union (http://odftoolkit.org) provides a home for libraries that accelerate the development of ODF-supporting applications. ---------------------------------------- ODF INTEROPERABILITY There are already many ODF implementations ? desktop and web-based, both proprietary and open source ? with very good if not 100% perfect interoperability. The "plugfest" initiative illustrates the strong commitment on the part of leading vendors for continuous improvement with regard to ODF interoperability ? not just in word but in actual deeds. -- ODF "Plugfests" Iron Out Differences -- So-called "plugfests" bringing together ODF implementers to fine-tune their interoperability capabilities and develop test scenarios, recommendations and best practices were held in Orvieto, Italy, and The Hague. An initiative of the Dutch government program Netherlands in Open Connection and the OpenDoc Society, the ultimate aim of the ?plugfest? is to achieve full seamless interoperability for the entire feature set of ODF across all suppliers, platforms and supported technologies. An ODF plugfest series is planned for 2010, the first on April 15-17 in Granada, Spain. -- OASIS ODF Interop Technical Committee Formed -- A new technical committee, the OASIS ODF Interoperability and Conformance (OIC) Committee, was formed to help improve interoperability and conformance to the ODF specification. The OIC Committee will analyze the state of ODF interoperability, make recommendations, compile a corpus of ODF interoperability test documents, and host multi-vendor interoperability demonstrations showcasing products that conform, among other activities. ---------------------------------------- ODF ALLIANCE: DAVID LeDUC REPLACES MARINO MARCICH FOR COORDINATION OF ALLIANCE ACTIVITIES Effective 1 March 2010, David LeDuc has taken over coordination of Alliance activities. David is not new to ODF or the Alliance. As the Senior Director of Public Policy for the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), David was instrumental in helping to launch the Alliance in 2006 and recruit the initial group of 36 member organizations. David has been highly engaged in the operations of the Alliance since its inception and is looking forward to increasing his role in the ODF community and within the Alliance. David will replace Marino Marcich, who stepped down from his position at the end of February. During Marino?s four-year tenure, the Alliance became a globally recognized community and leading voice in support of ODF and open standards. Notably, during his tenure as the Managing Director, Marino successfully oversaw the following major accomplishments of the Alliance: -- ODFA growth into an entity of more than 550 members in 68 countries; -- Development of eight national and two regional chapters that preside at the forefront of global ODF advocacy efforts; -- Support by 25 governments around the world in their adoption of pro-ODF policies; -- ODF implementation by myriad applications available on all major platforms, including traditional desktop editors, as well as web and mobile applications. We sincerely thank Marino for his great work and dedication and look forward to his continued involvement with ODF. ---------------------------------------- WHAT'S AHEAD IN 2010? Looking ahead to the remainder of 2010 and beyond, there are many significant opportunities for ODF. Following is a list of some of the highlights we'll be focused on here at the ODFA: -- Approval of ODF 1.2 -- The approval of ODF 1.2 as an OASIS Standard and subsequent submission to ISO/IEC JTC1 for approval is a key objective in 2010. The Alliance will continue to work within OASIS towards this goal, and we look forward to working with you and other supporters in the following necessary steps: 1) Complete OASIS ODF Technical Committee review and approval; 2) Response to all public review comments 3) OASIS member implementation/certification of ODF; 4) OASIS approval ballot ratification; 5) OASIS Interoperability Demonstration of at least three implementations of ODF interoperating; and 6) Successful ballot in ISO/IEC JTC1! -- Continued ODF Adoption -- The 25 governments that have adopted ODF as their exchange format is quite an achievement for the ODF-supporting community, yet there is considerable room for growth. "Open formats" have fast become conventional wisdom in the public sector; it is essential that governments choose ODF as their exchange format for editable documents. Not only is this trend towards openness expected to continue in 2010, but the ODF Alliance seeks to help more governments begin using ODF as their exchange format by providing additional guidance on how to move to all-ODF. -- Plugfests and Interoperability -- ODF is the file format that you can open, write, and edit using any brand of software, anytime, on any application, platform or device. That was the vision when ODF 1.0 arrived on the scene in May 2005 as an approved standard under the stewardship of the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS). With ODF's increased adoption and nearly universal support in a growing variety of applications and tools, ?plugfests? and other interoperability initiatives are essential to translating the vision into reality. We look forward to the next plugfest on 15-17 April 2010, in Granada, Spain. -- Microsoft Support for ODF -- Microsoft Office 2010 is now in beta and is likely to be released in the June time frame. Will Microsoft's ODF support be better than the support it provided in ServicePack 2 for Office 2007, especially in areas like spreadsheet formula? The hints we've received so far suggest that Office 2010 will not be much better, but that Office 2010 SP1 might have some improvements. The so-called "ballot screen" prompting users upon the first boot of Office 2010 to choose between OOXML and ODF does signal Microsoft's general disposition to ODF. As the ODF Alliance has pointed out, not only does the ballot screen offer OOXML as the first option, more significantly, it provides what is essentially a warning ? OOXML is designated to support "all the features" of the software, while ODF is explained to enable "many features," but "some content or edit-ability may be lost." MS Office is the dominate player in this market, with over 90 percent market share, so how they implement ODF is obviously critical. Continued pressure on Microsoft from its customers, including the many ODF-supporting governments, to implement support for ODF in a way that plays well with the software of other vendors is essential. ---------------------------------------- CONCLUSION In closing, the ODF Alliance thanks you for your support and looks forward to your continued engagement in the months ahead. Tell the FCC to Stop the Internet Rip-Off http://free.convio.net/site/R?i=9TdZ59Pnyr4jWEmZx4REfA.. Dear Brandon, The FCC just released its National Broadband Plan. Based on the gushing media response, you'd think that America's Internet was sailing smoothly into the future. Think again. There are some good things in the plan, but it punts on the thorniest problems that Internet users face in America: astronomical prices, slow speeds and no real choices among providers. Stop the Great Internet Rip-Off http://free.convio.net/site/R?i=rRmmgq28aQ6GgG3j2liafQ.. The FCC plan is a promising start, but it's short on action. And Comcast and Time Warner Cable are thumbing their noses at it - having just announced plans to jack up their Internet prices even higher. That's why we're asking you to sign on to this letter telling FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski that we need real choices, lower prices, faster speeds and an open Internet in America. Nothing less. http://free.convio.net/site/R?i=_Fa1-DGMDSs_c3uiclh7pg.. The only way to keep down prices, and get the Internet we need, is for the FCC to follow through on our demands. We're facing: * High Prices: Cable and phone companies jack up Internet prices simply because they can. People have too few options for world-class Internet connections, resulting in costs that are among the highest in the developed world. * Slow Speeds: Average U.S. broadband speeds are 20 times slower than speeds available to users in Japan, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Korea and Hong Kong. * Few Choices: Five percent of American households have no wireline providers; 13 percent of households have just one; and 78 percent have just two. In other words, 96 percent of the country has two or fewer choices for wired broadband. The National Broadband Plan is our best chance to fix America's Internet problem. But prices will not go down, and speeds will not increase without concrete action from the FCC. Tell the FCC: Stop the Great Internet Rip-Off http://free.convio.net/site/R?i=Fq0FgPw3bHt-JHte_TAYBw..
