==> Second Annual End User Summit Connects IT Leaders, Linux Developers <==
The End User Summit, sponsored by IBM and Intel, brought together CTOs,
architects, senior IT representatives, and kernel developers at the Hyatt
Jersey City on the Hudson this November for a one-of-a-kind, invitation-only
event that delivered on the promise of advancing Linux in the business
world.
Key speakers at this year's event included Brian Clark, Vice President &
Chief Architect, NYSE Euronext, who described how the New York Stock
Exchange deploys Linux across their lines of business as a competitive
strength, and highlighted the role Linux plays in the architecture behind
NYSE and the new roles Linux is playing in light of the economic
environment.
IDC's Al Gillen provided an overview of the Linux market and context for the
position of Linux versus other competitive solutions in the market today and
in the future.
Tim Golden from Bank of America focused on the current adoption curve to
open source software for end user companies and community participation
scenarios; various methods that end user companies can utilize to
participate as community members and offensive strategies that end users can
adopt to prepare for larger, more active roles in the Linux community.
Panel discussions were also a big part of the Summit, especially the popular
"The Future of Linux: Straight From the Source" panel moderated by Novell's
James Bottomley, with Len Brown from Intel Corporation; kernel developer
Christoph Lameter; and Theodore Ts'o from the Linux Foundation, who
discussed the Linux kernel's past, present, and future.
==> Japan Linux Symposium Videos Available <==
The Japan Linux Symposium has been deemed a success by many who attended the
October show in Tokyo, Japan. This newest Linux Foundation event in Asia
Pacific brought togethRead More er developers, managers, executives,
students and end users from Japan, Korea, China and many international
countries.
The event featured noted Linux and open source rock stars from around the
world, including a keynote interview with Linus Torvalds, conducted by LF
Executive Director Jim Zemlin.
In his brief introduction, Zemlin highlighted some key numbers that are a
part of the Linux ecosystem.
2,700,000. Number of lines of code added to kernel in the last year
according to the recently updated "Who Writes Linux" paper from the Linux
Foundation.
10,923. Number of lines of code added to the Linux kernel every day.
5,547. Number of lines deleted every day.
1. There's only one Linus Torvalds, founder of Linux.
After his introduction, Zemlin sat down with Torvalds, who discussed the
huge growth of Linux, how it came to be, and where it's going next. Visit

==> New Members Elected to Linux Foundation Technical Advisory Board <==
The Linux Foundation has announced the results of its 2009 Technical
Advisory Board (TAB) election, which was held at the Japan Linux Symposium
in Tokyo.
The TAB consists of ten members of the Linux kernel community who are
annually elected by their peers to serve staggered, two-year terms. The TAB
collaborates with the Linux Foundation on programs and issues that affect
the Linux community. The TAB Chair also sits on the board of the Linux
Foundation.
Three new members were elected to the TAB this year:
* Alan Cox, employed by Intel SSG and manager of major Linux projects such
as the original Linux SMP implementation, the Linux Mac68K port and an
experimental 16bit Linux subset port to the 8086;
* Thomas Gleixner, who manages bug reports for NAND FLASH, core timers and
the unified x86 architecture; and
* Ted Ts?o, the first North American Linux kernel developer and Linux
Foundation fellow. Ted was also voted as the new Vice Chair.
Re-elected for two-year terms are Jon Corbet, Linux kernel developer and
author of the Linux Kernel Weather Report, and Greg Kroah-Hartman, employed
by Novell and kernel maintainer for the ?stable branch as well as manager of
the Linux Device Driver Project.

==> New Perks for Individual Members Very Popular <==
Last month the Linux Foundation announced new, exclusive benefits for
individual members, including employee purchase pricing from Dell, HP and
Lenovo, and the opportunity to secure a Linux.com email address for life.
The program has proven to be very popular.
Linux Foundation individual members can now get up to 40 percent off of
Lenovo devices and standard employee purchase pricing from Dell and HP. Dell
also offers a best price guarantee to Linux Foundation members. These
benefits can translate into hundreds or thousands of dollars for those who
purchase their devices as part of this program.
Existing members that would like to ensure their Linux.com email address is
permanent and not dependent on Linux Foundation membership renewal can elect
to secure it with a one-time $150 fee. New members who want the same benefit
will pay a total of $249 for the first year?s membership and the lifetime
benefit.

The Register: Latest Moblin Linux Polished for Netbooks
The effort putting Linux on Intel's mobile Atom processor has seen its
latest release, with an across-the-board polish for Moblin. The steering
committee of the Moblin Project, the Intel-initiated effort that was spun
off to the Linux Foundation earlier this year, proudly announced a raft of
capabilities new to version 2.1.

Ars Technica: Linux Foundation Aims to Boost Membership with New Perks
The Linux Foundation is hoping to boost its membership by offering new perks
to individual members. These perks include a lifetime e-mail account at the
linux.com domain and modest hardware discounts from some of the
organization's partners.

USA Today: Despite Windows 7, Linux Raps Harder at Company Doors
In building Windows 7, Microsoft went to great lengths to elicit feedback
from small and midsize firms in particular, says Rich Reynolds, a Windows
general manager. "We designed an operating system that saves them time and
money." But Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, counters
that Linux is a better fit for cash-strapped businesses. "Linux is younger
and cheaper than Windows, and we are very patient."

BNET: Why Microsoft Will Lose the Mobile OS Wars
It doesn?t matter whether you think that Linux Foundation executive director
Jim Zetlin is right when he predicts that the open source OS will become
ascendant. It doesn?t matter whether you are a Google or Apple booster. It
also doesn?t matter whether you think, as my colleague Michael Hickins does,
that browsers and HTML 5 will largely eliminate the importance of the OS.
(By the way, I think his argument, though not an absolute lock on the
future, is well considered.)

The H: Linux-Kongress 2009: New Filesystems, Optimised Programming
IBM developer Theodore Ts'o, who has been "outsourced" to the Linux
Foundation as a CTO (Chief Technology Officer) for the time being, presented
the conference's opening keynote. In his presentation "Linux and Open Source
in 2010 and Beyond," he identified mobile computing and cloud computing as
the two IT sectors where companies are currently showing a particular
interest in Linux, replacing proprietary solutions with Linux-based
technologies.

Crave: How to Run Quake III and HD videos on a Netbook
However, it's beginning to seem like the limitation is not on the hardware,
but the drivers. Martin Mohring, from the Linux Foundation, was at a Mobile
Dev Camp event in Germany. There, he showed an MSI Wind U115 with an Atom
Z530 1.6GHz/Intel GMA 500 combo not only playing an HD video clip, but also
running Quake III at about 35fps.

==> From the Foundation: Cloud Computing Too Costly in the Long Term? <==
During their own Sept. 29 Cloud Computing Summit, IDC made what at first
glance sounded like a self-defeating statement: clouds, in the long run, are
actually a more expensive option than a company running its own datacenter.
The story came out today from Computerworld UK... it gives good coverage of
the presentation made at the Summit by Matthew McCormack, Consultant,
European Systems Group, IDC. Lots of good quotes. I wanted to see the
numbers, though, and while looking to contact McCormack, I found just the
information I was looking for.
IDC ran a model that analyzed what the costs would be to run 100 percent of
a large company's IT infrastructure entirely within the cloud versus on
their own data center. It turns out that according to IDC's estimates, after
the first three years of a cloud IT operation, costs would exceed those of
an optimally run datacenter, and that includes the added three-year refresh
cycles costs of 30 percent for the datacenter (see slide 6). By the end of
10 years, costs for the cloud operation would hit ?26M (US$41M), while the
datacenter would only rack up ?15M (US$24.6M).

If below URLs don't work - see the original posting at
http://isen.com/blog/2009/10/wrong-on-wrong-on-network-neutrality.html
Wrong on the "Exaflood," Wrong on Network Neutrality In 2007, Johna Till
Johnson, president of Nemertes Research, published a paper that hyped a
so-called "Exaflood" -- a kooky Discovery Institute
ideaabout
how the Internet would drown in its own data.
The Nemertes press
releaseon
the paper was widely reported in newspapers. It described itself as a
".
. . landmark study . . . groundbreaking analysis . . . evidence the exaflood
is coming . . . "
It said,
*The findings indicate that by 2010 . . . users could increasingly encounter
Internet "brownouts" or interruptions to the applications they?ve become
accustomed to using on the internet.*
We are mere weeks from 2010. There's no sign of The Exaflood or brownouts.
In fact, the best data indicate that Internet growth appears to be
slowing.
In two short years, the Nemertes paper's main conclusion is falsified by the
data.
Now Johna Till Johnson says, Hello Net Neutrality, Goodbye
Internet.
She says that Net Neutrality gives carriers
*. . . just one option for recouping their costs: Charge by the bit.*
Wow. Talk about false choices!
Maybe she's forgotten about "charge by the month," and "charge more for
faster connections." How about "charge more for better service."
Maybe the poor carriers aren't making enough to build faster Internet
connections. Verizon just made a paltry $6 billion in profits last year and
paid $1.3 billion in dividends. AT&T made $12 billion and paid out $2.5
billion to shareholders. These companies need help, Johna. They're really
suffering from too much government regulation to build a good Internet.
Johna Till Johnson's "Goodbye Internet" screed misses today's real Net
Neutrality action, which is in wireless. The wireless NN action is not about
big bandwidth at all. Quite the opposite. Spurred by FCC Chairman
Genichowski's recent speech
suggesting that wireless
NN should be the law of the land, the discussion
has shifted to whether wireless companies have the right to block competing low
bandwidth apps like texting and telephony over IP. As Wall Street analyst
Craig Moffett recently said in the Washington
Post
,
*For wireless, the arbitrage risk comes from low bandwidth applications like
Skype and Google Voice, but unfortunately for the voice business, almost all
the revenue today comes from low bandwidth voice and data applications. So
it's a risk that simply can't be managed by the adoption of usage-based
pricing schemes.
So up to now, operators have managed that risk by simply prohibiting certain
applications. In net neutral world, they wouldn't have that luxury.*
Network Neutrality has never been about the idea of too much bandwidth on a
limited network. That's dinosaur feces. It's always been about whether the
telcos and cablecos could leverage ties between their network and certain
apps to make discriminatory, anti-competitive profits.
The strength of the Internet is that it accepts all traffic without a "will
it make money" test. That's why a Pez dispenser collector could grow a
hobbyist site into eBay. It's how two Stanford students could grow their
thesis into Google. It's how an Israeli apps company that wanted to reduce
its phone bill invented Internet telephony. Johna Till Johnson isn't just
wrong this time, she has it exactly backwards; the reality is that if we
ever say "Goodbye Net Neutrality" we'll also be saying, "Goodbye Internet."

Dear Reader,
We're keenly aware that travel budgets aren't expanding anytime soon, so
we're experimenting with new ways to present a rich conference experience
without the time and travel costs to participants.
Check out O'Reilly offerings - And perhaps it is time to seriously consider
doing the same for PSNUG meetings...
PS- I went to Apple "Snow Leopard" intro event, let me know if you all want
a short review.
PPS- If we want Apple presenter, then we need to contact the "Apple Stores"
and talk with "Business Manager" to work out details.
(meet at Apple Store? or ?)

Meeting will be at the usual place - Kaleidoscope Consulting - http://www.psnug.org/directions.html
For those that have not heard yet, Kaleidoscope Consulting is moving their offices. If you can make it to their offices early, they are going to have a truck and would be happy to see willing hands and backs to help load the truck.

If anyone here is in the Las Vegas, Nevada (USA) area and wants to give
one or two presentations about the openSUSE Community at GWAVACon at
the end of January, get in touch with me.
This past January, Chris Hobbs and I both presented at GWAVACon on
behalf of openSUSE and we had huge numbers attending the sessions. One
was a SUSEStudio demonstration and the other was on the benefits of
getting involved in the Community (aimed at Novell partners and
customers.)
GWAVACon appreciated us and invited us to attend once again. But,
unfortunately, we don't have a travel budget, so I can't go.
Understand, if you go, it's on your own dime. But if you're also
interested in GroupWise and other Novell topics, it's a good opportunity
to go, present sessions and get free admission to the conference to see
other relevant sessions.
If you volunteer to go, I will be more than happy to work with you on
tailoring good session topics aimed at this audience market.
Let me know ASAP. Thanks!

Because there are no physical machines yet to test ARM

we are running Debian i386 5.0.3
to get up to speed on the software assuming the ARM software will be
similar.

Clearly written. I find it interesting that there is no mention of the
recycling of the technology under a new name - we have seen this
before. Novell was working on (and abandoned) advanced clustering with
Wolf Mountain (remember), in turn it used classic elements from
classic supercomputing. There was even a small scale mac product that
used some key ideas of this kind of distributed data storage, .data
club for mac'.

* Get One, Give One Shares Benefits of LF Membership
* 4th Annual Collaboration Summit Approaches
* More Japan Linux Symposium Videos Available
* LinuxCon 2010 Dates, Location Set
* Linux Foundation in the News
* From the Foundation: Browser Shares Reveal True Benefits of Open Source
==> Get One, Give One Shares Benefits of LF Membership <==
Thanks to a new Linux Foundation program, if you sign up for an individual
membership, the Linux Foundation will donate a free one-year student
membership either to a student you know or students who are seeking a
sponsored membership.
Here's how the new program works: for every new individual member who joins
the Linux Foundation before January 31, 2010, the Linux Foundation will give
a free membership to a student for one year. Students who are interested in
obtaining a sponsored membership can sign up on a waiting list at
http://www.linuxfoundation.org/about/join/individual/student-waiting-listand
will be sponsored on a first-come, first-serve basis.
When they join the Linux Foundation, new individual members can elect to
either sponsor a student on the waiting list or can request the membership
be given to a friend or family member. To sponsor a specific student, new
members should list the student's name and email address in the order
comments on the checkout page.
Any student, whether specified or on the waiting list, will be required to
show proof of student status in the form of a valid student ID.
Members have access to exclusive benefits, including a Linux.com email
address (ex: joe at linux.com ); a Linux Foundation t-shirt; employee purchase
pricing at Dell, HP, and Lenovo with savings up to 40% on purchases of
hardware and accessories; 35% off O?Reilly books and e-books; a variety of
deep discounts to attend events or subscribe to industry publications; and
the ability to run for a Linux Foundation board seat, among others.
Visit the Individual Membership page at
http://www.linuxfoundation.org/about/join/individual to learn about all of
the great benefits you receive with Individual Membership and to become an
Linux Foundation member.
==> 4th Annual Collaboration Summit Approaches <==
The 4th Annual Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit is on track for April
14-16, 2010, at the Hotel Kabuki in San Francisco, CA. Japantown will be the
location again in 2010 for the Summit, an invitation-only event that will
gather core kernel developers, distribution maintainers, ISVs, end users,
system vendors and other community organizations to meet face-to-face to
tackle and solve the most pressing issues facing Linux today.
If you want to be a part of this event, request an invite at
http://events.linuxfoundation.org/component/registrationpro/?func=details&did=26
.
Registration is limited so please submit your invitation request to the
Collab Summit today.
==> More Japan Linux Symposium Videos Available <==
The Japan Linux Symposium was well attended in Tokyo in October, but if you
couldn't make it to the event, you still have a chance to watch key sessions
of the Symposium at the Linux Foundation Video site.
Linux Foundation staffers are still posting videos of keynote sessions, now
with English captions, and attendees of the Symposium are publishing their
own videos of the technical sessions as well.
To see all of the videos, visit the Video site at
http://video.linuxfoundation.org/categories/conferences-symposiums/2009-japan-linux-symposium
.
==> LinuxCon 2010 Dates, Location Set <==
The enormous success of LinuxCon in 2009 demonstrated a real need for a
professional, educational event in the Linux community that allowed users of
all levels and interests to come together and plan the future of Linux.
LinuxCon 2010 will take place August 10-12, 2010 at the Renaissance Boston
Waterfront in Boston, MA. The 2010 location taps into the vast amount of
open source talent and business acumen found on the East Coast, and in the
Boston area in particular.
For more information on the next LinuxCon, visit
http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/linuxcon.
==> Linux Foundation in the News <==
CNET News: Zemlin: 'Industry transformation depends on Linux' (Q&A)
The closest thing to a CEO in Linux land is Jim Zemlin, executive director
of The Linux Foundation. While Zemlin doesn't steer the Linux ship, he does
a great deal to corral its competing interests--vendors, developers,
customers--to guide Linux to the impressive market position it holds today.
I caught up with Zemlin late last week to get a pulse on the state of Linux
in the market. As ever, Zemlin didn't disappoint.
Alibaba.com: Why The Crunchpad Didn't Pencil Out
Set aside the particulars of the Crunchpad drama for a moment and talk to
Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation. Software is already
free. Chipmakers such as Intel have teams of hundreds of engineers building
sophisticated software for consumer electronics around the Linux operating
system, Zemlin says. Hardware, meanwhile, is only getting cheaper. The
materials bill for a decent laptop is now as little as $150, he explains.
(

)
PC World: Microsoft and Rivals Trash Talk Google Chrome OS
Other rivals said they welcomed Chrome OS. Jim Zemlin, executive director of
The Linux Foundation, said, "What's good for Chrome is good for Moblin, and
what's good for Moblin is good for Chrome."

OSNews: Nobel Peace Prize to Linus Torvalds?
Now this is one to ponder. This year, the Nobel Peace Prize went to Barack
Obama, president of the United States. The prize has been given to both
politicians and non-politicians alike, and Keith Lofstrom thinks its time to
hand over the Peace Prize to a non-politician once more: Linus Torvalds.
ZDNet Asia: Developers Get Beta SDK for Atom
Intel [has] launched a test version of its software developer kit (SDK) for
the Atom Developer Program, part of the company's plan to sell Atom software
on behalf of developers via a network of application stores.
==> From the Foundation: Browser Shares Reveal True Benefits of Open Source
<==
Open source browsers are at a third of the market share, and with the
newcomer Chrome on the scene, we can only expect this open source share to
increase in the coming months.
There are three positives that come out of data like this. First, there's
the obvious argument against open-source naysayers: there are very few
arguments one would have against the success of open source as a general
concept when looking at the popularity of open source browsers.
Second, there's the nice fact that nearly all of these browsers provide a
nice set of Linux applications for people to try. Firefox, Opera, and
Konqueror are great Linux browsers already, and the Chromium development
version of Chrome works pretty well on Linux for now.
But I believe the most important takeaway from this data is that we have
finally reached a tipping point for open standards across the entire web.

(from your browser, one mouse click adds repo and installs the program,
after root password, of course!!)

PS - Steve should have reminded me about GAVAcon sooner, AND he should tell
us all about the presentation he is working on. So Steve, are you able to
tell us anything?
PSS - meeting location moved to KENT, so find new directions on the Calendar
page - which you should also check out, as Steve is working hard to get us a
great presentation for January - check it out !!

Faster, Freer, Smarter: Whatever your Goal, Make It Happen with Open Source
More than 2,500 experts, developers, sys admins, and hackers will meet up at
OSCON 2010 to explore the tools, services, and platforms that make up the
vibrant open source ecosystem. Join us!
The OSCON Call for Participation is now open. If you have winning
techniques, favorite lifesavers, war stories, productivity tips, or other
ideas to share, we want to hear from you. We're especially on the look-out
for ways to do more with less, design and usability best practices, mobile
device innovations, cloud computing, parallelization, open standards and
data, open source in government, business models, and beyond.
Speak up about the freedom--and opportunity--of open source at OSCON 2010.
