The is painted as a classic ?clash of the titans? between Google and Microsoft, with Google finally directly assaulting Microsoft?s top cash business. (They have already opened the war against Microsoft?s other cash cow, Office, with Google Docs.) While this is a great story, I prefer to frame at as David vs Goliath with the little OS that could, Linux, as the foundation of this announcement, as well as the other operating systems challenging Windows. Apple wanted to use a pure GSM chipset to minimize the RF hardware needed. To be used on CDMA networks (only deployed in US and South Korea) would have required a second RF chipset (minimal cost but extra board real estate, power consumption, and heat), or an integrated GSM/CDMA chipset (much higher cost). In the US, that decision equated to AT&T only; Sprint/Nextel and Verizon Wireless use CDMA. T-Mobile did not have any 3G capability at the time, and when it does (trickling out now) it uses a non-standard set of frequencies. So... Apple was forced into partnering with AT&T in the US, and AT&T struck a hard bargain in the exclusivity requirement. Apple had some leverage too - it forced AT&T to create new infrastructure to support Visual Voicemail. But the iPhone is turning out to be a Faustian Bargain for AT&T - Apple controls the majority of the customer relationship with the App Store, iTunes Store, and handles hardware support on a par with AT&T stores (unlike with any other phone vendor that AT&T resells). AT&T is increasingly forced into the role of "transport" or as I prefer to call it (per David Isenberg) - AT&T is becoming a "Stupid Network" for the iPhone. Indeed... the integrated approach that Apple took with the iPhone has proven to be working so well, and so profitably for Apple, that it really is undermining the entire premise of the wireless telephony industry. And... it's not a foregone conclusion that AT&T will update the iPhone to include CDMA. The US market is actually not as large as other markets such as Europe and Asia that use exclusively GSM. To get maximum economies of scale, Apple may decide to maintain GSM-only iPhones. Apple could drop the US exclusivity to AT&T in the US and allow... if not actively promote, iPhone usage on other networks such as T-Mobile (Internet connectivity would work, but slowly). And there are a few small, regional carriers that use GSM that could offer the iPhone. But, ultimately, the iPhone will be much less of a factor in the coming years. Just as the Mac provided a template for how computing could be done a lot better than the prevailing systems of the time, the iPhone has done the same for wireless phones. Android will soon gain near-parity with the iPhone's capabilities (but not its "polish"), and the Palm Pre and RIM are also aggressively pushing to provide iPhone-like capabilities. That said, Apple and the iPhone (and the forthcoming iTablet) will continue to thrive because of the ecosystem - iTunes store for content, App Store for software, and extended services like MobileMe make things pretty simple and integrated. The statement is completely true, and the relationship between Microsoft and Linux will never be the same again. Some of those files may be on a computer that's set up to boot into either Linux or Windows. Others may live on other Windows computers you have networked together in the house. Either way, don't worry, you can get to those files. Luckily, while a lot of word processing options for Linux have fallen by the wayside, new ones keep springing up, too. A larger problem is the installation paradigm itself: downloading/loading a large chunk of binary code onto your hard drive, then turning on a setup routine that lets that code infltrate the operating system, most of the time with positive consequences, but sometimes not so positive. In legalese, it means that you own the copyright over the code, and can restrict others from using it, or to grant them limited rights (via licensing). More importantly, you are free to decide yourself on what terms you want to license the code, e.g., whether to for example license your code for a fee (i.e., via proprietary licensing) or under an open source license (where a fee is sometimes possible, but not necessarily always a viable business model given the characteristics of open source licenses). Starting today, a new coalition of technology industry companies, organizations, and academic institutions will be actively promoting one sure way of cutting IT costs: using open source software and open technology solutions. ( http://linux.com/news/enterprise/biz-enterprise/29699-open-source-for-america-promotes-foss-for-government ) Canonical Releases Launchpad Source Code A major advantage of open source software development is the communication between the members of any given project. But what happens when communication must take place between projects? That's where a web-based collaboration service like Launchpad comes in. ( http://linux.com/news/software/developer/29342-canonical-releases-launchpad-source-code ) Installing Eeebuntu On The eeePC 1000HE Before even taking the sticker off the screen, the stock 1-GB memory was replaced with the new stick. I also plugged in the microscopic Logitech receiver and put the included batteries into the mouse. I booted into Windows XP just to make sure that the thing would power up and then it was off to its big brother, my ASUS X83-VM laptop, to set things up for the installation. Soon, Jaunty Jackalope 9.04, via Eeebuntu would be running on the new Netbook. ( http://linux.com/news/embedded-mobile/netbooks/29800-installing-eeebuntu-on-the-eeepc-1000he ) Open Source Word Processors Give You Lots of Free Choices, Part 1 With interest heating up around Linux on netbooks, notebooks and desktop PCs, more and more people are hunting for good word processing software that runs on Linux. Luckily, while a lot of word processing options for Linux have fallen by the wayside, new ones keep springing up, too. Meanwhile, some of the older standbys are picking up features that rival those of Microsoft Word. ( http://linux.com/news/software/applications/28215-open-source-word-processors-give-you-lots-of-free-choices-part-1 ) Open Source Word Processors Give You Lots of Free Choices, Part 2 If you're like most PC users, the word processor is one of your own most mission-critical applications. On the Linux side, the OpenOffice.org Writer word processing program has garnered a lot of attention lately, partly due to the inclusion of the OpenOffice.org suite on high-profile netbooks. But literally dozens of other word processing applications are also out there for Linux, and some of these are lighter in weight, suiting them to possible use on either a netbook, an embedded device, or that old legacy PC sitting around in your storage area. ( http://linux.com/news/software/applications/30386-open-source-word-processors-give-you-lots-of-free-choices-part-2 ) A Closer Look at the KIWI Imaging System With KIWI the creation of a USB stick-installed OS, the creation of an appliance, or the creation of a VM (Virtual Machine) or LiveCD with your own customized distribution has become a matter of setting up a configuration directory and running a few simple commands. (http://ldn.linuxfoundation.org/article/a-closer-look-kiwi-imaging-system) The Kernel Newbie Corner: Building and Running a New Kernel This week, we're going to take a bit of a detour from building and loading modules to discuss how to configure, build, install and reboot a new kernel since, very soon, we'll be covering debugging and there's only so much you can do without being able to configure and reboot under a new kernel with extra debugging features. And while most of you have probably already done this once or twice, I'll try to throw in a couple surprises even for the hardened veterans out there. ( http://linux.com/learn/linux-training/29812-the-kernel-newbie-corner-building-and-running-a-new-kernel ) Multicore Video Decoding with MPlayer, Part 1 In this two-part article series I'll look at two ways to possibly improve your h264 playback with MPlayer: using multiple CPU cores and using the GPU to offload the decoding. I'll include benchmarks so you can see the effect each of these has on performance. Hopefully after reading these articles you can make an educated guess if either method might be enough to solve your high-definition h264-decoding jitters. ( http://ldn.linuxfoundation.org/article/multicore-video-decoding-with-mplayer-part-1 ) On the Right rPath: An Interview with Billy Marshall, Part 2 In Part 2, our focus is on which applications are likely to make their way into SWAs, how some large ISVs are creating SWAs around their applications, and the relationship between SWAs and clouds. ( http://linux.com/news/enterprise/cloud-computing/30124-on-the-right-rpath-an-interview-with-billy-marshall-part-2 ) Linux Paves Way for New ?Open Source in America? Coalition Linux has a strong history of deployments in government agencies around the globe and has helped drive the adoption of open source applications in government in recent years. But, we have a long, winding road in front of us. Research firm Gartner predicts that only 25% of government vertical, domain-specific applications will either be open source or contain software developed by a community by 2011. Microsoft has become a contributor to the Linux kernel. Microsoft and Greg Kroah-Hartman have posted about this in more detail, so I?d encourage you to go read those posts for the full details. The long and short of it, though, is that Microsoft has contributed roughly 20,000 lines of code to the Linux kernel related to their Hyper-V drivers. So far, this week has been chock full of excitement. Though not part of the ?official? OSCON program, the Community Leadership Summit started on Saturday. Lots of people from OSCON were in attendance, but also a fair number of people from communities that have nothing to do with open source. This was a pretty good mix. A few hundred people showed up Saturday morning, and a smaller crowd turned up Sunday. Upon loading the kvm-intel.ko kernel module, I receive a rather peculiar error message: "kvm: disabled by BIOS". Disabled by BIOS? Although the error really didn't say much, I could only assume that somehow the BIOS provided by Sony for my laptop disabled Intel VT by default. No matter where you stand on your opinion of Google, you can not deny the Chrome browser is fast. In fact, Chrome is setting the standard for browser speed such that the competition is now playing a serious game of catch up. The Chrome browser is so fast (at both startup and page load) that the difference goes well beyond noticeable. Next to all of its competition Google Chrome looks as if it is running in a completely different gear all together. Linux system administration skills are now the number 2 hottest IT job skill. In the last year, the value of Linux skills has risen 50 percent, an astounding rise in a tough economy. ( http://linux.com/news/featured-blogs/167-amanda-mcpherson/33050-the-value-of-linux-job-skills-rises-50 ) Brian Proffitt: IBM: UNIX to Linux Migration Rate Growing The question of whether Linux is ready for the enterprise has long been answered by the enormous success the operating system has had in enterprise and data center adoption. The new question should be: how long will it take for Linux to supplant Unix's place in the enterprise? ( http://linux.com/news/featured-blogs/168-brian-proffitt/33283-ibm-unix-to-linux-migration-rate-growing ) Linus Torvalds: Programming I've actually written code lately, although for some reason it's been all these stupid projects. First I needed to fix the kernel tty refcounting, then I got all OCD on the git SHA1 routines. (http://linux.com/news/featured-blogs/176-linus-torvalds/33604-programming) Robert Day: The Kernel Newbie Corner: What's in That Loadable Module, Anyway? In the very near future, we're going to attack the problem of debugging both the kernel and our loadable modules in real time. But in order to do that, we need to take a slight detour and dig further into the actual structure of both of those types of objects to see how they're put together. Yes, this is going to be a bit dry but you'll thank me for it some day. ( http://linux.com/learn/linux-training/32867-the-kernel-newbie-corner-whats-in-that-loadable-module-anyway ) Amanda McPherson: How To Survive LinuxCon I?ve frequently been accused of packing too much into our Linux Foundation events, making it nearly impossible to choose one session without missing other ?must attend? ones. At this accusation, I proudly raise my hand and say, ?Guilty as charged.? But by admitting guilt, I am not admitting repentance. While Angela and Craig have ensured enough lunch, break and networking time, LinuxCon is a testament to the same Linux Foundation strategy of packing every session with great speaking talent and interesting Linux and open source topics. One look at the LinuxCon schedule and you will see we really haven?t changed at all. Like Sun Microsystems, Novell and IBM Lotus are both offering word processors based on OpenOffice.org's open source Writer application, but none of these offerings is exactly alike. Meanwhile, Moblin--a Linux-based netbook environment first launched by Intel--is now on the verge of packing more power around word processing and other aspects of office productivity. Open source and open data standards play a role in collaboration, laboratory and literary scholarly research, publishing, and managing the overall research programs at institutions of higher learning. Some people use one word per slide. Others absolutely fill the screen with text, gadgets, spinning icons, moving cartoons, and the kitchen sink. I swear, a colleague of mine prided himself on filling every square inch of a slide with just text. It drove me nuts. For more information, visit: ug.oreilly.com Dear Reader, In just a few short weeks, we'll be launching two brand new events around a topic that's inciting a lot of discussion in Washington, Silicon Valley, and around the world: Government 2.0. Tim O'Reilly has defined the role of government as: "a convener of things that we as individuals and companies can't do alone?providing enabling technologies for citizens to serve themselves." Gov 2.0 Expo Showcase, happening on September 8 is a one-day, rapid-fire demonstration of some of the most innovative Web 2.0 technologies destined to change the way we interact with our elected officials, political institutions, and our public data. Twenty-five projects will compete in five different categories, illustrating the amazing breadth of what's possible. Gov 2.0 Summit follows the Showcase on September 9-10. The event is chockablock with insightful panels, on-stage conversations, and discussions of the future of governing from some of the most forward-thinking people in both the public and private sectors, including federal CTO Aneesh Chopra, GSA CIO Casey Coleman, Twitter creator Jack Dorsey, NPR's Andrea Seabrook, Google's chief economist Hal Varian, and many other key influencers. Read more about these important events below. OSCON, our annual gathering that is synonymous with summer for many of the open source tribe, wrapped up its eleventh edition last month. It's an event that marks the evolution of open technologies and the communities who care for them. The 2009 event was no exception, and in addition to the many announcements and updates, there was also strong call to bring more diversity to the stages and seats of technical conferences like OSCON. We welcome your thoughts and suggestions for how best to accomplish that worthy goal. If you'd like to check out presentations, video, and news from OSCON 2009, visit conferences.oreilly.com/oscon . "Technologist Tim O'Reilly is spending time in Washington, and bringing Washington officials to San Francisco, to do something different - perhaps something more realistic. O'Reilly is trying to help government become a platform for innovation. A "government as platform" would supply raw digital data and other forms of support for private sector innovators to build on top of." They have a couple of Debian boxes that, after using the VMWare P->V tool, the server takes a kernel panic during boot on the virtual side. We have narrowed it down to what appears to be a problem in initrd.conf but can't crack it beyond that. I would appreciate a referral for a real Linux head that can help us get this taken care of. Customer is in Seattle but we can sure setup a remote access session for the individual to get in a do the fix. Thanks. I've been busy lately - working on a migration myself (Zen 7 to Zen 10, Netware 6.5 to Windows, Groupwise on Netware to either Linux or Windows, boss hasn't decided), racing, kids and the elections in November. Remember, it's all mail-in ballots now, so vote. Just vote, I don't care which party, platform, just make sure you vote. Anyway, we have a bit of a treat this month - our scheduled speaker couldn't make it so Steve Singhose has volunteered to do something he rarely does - present for us! This should be fun, his working title is: Lessons learned and tools used to date in a Microsoft AD to Novell DSfW - (Directory Services for Windows) migration. Given the migration woes everywhere this will be useful, and you can bet I'll be taking notes! So put this Wednesday . on your calendar - pre meeting food arrives shortly after 6, meeting to start at 6:30. We will attempt to keep to a schedule and be out by 8:45. See you there!
