(Emceed by Plone Foundation President, Jon Stahl) * Plone 4 - Content Management in 3D - Deliverance, Dexterity, and Deco. What might be on the horizon for Plone and where we are right now (led by David Glick, Cris Ewing, & Andrew Burkhalter) * Open Q&A, Discussion * Socializing & Fun ======= World Plone Day Agenda ======= Plone: How it helps you build great websites ------------ A brief overview of what Plone is all about -- led by Jon Stahl, Plone Foundation Board President Plone 4 - Content Management in 3D - Deliverance, Dexterity, and Deco. ------------ Many exciting things are being proposed and considered by the Plone 4 framework team for inclusion into the next major release of the Plone content management system. The future is certainly looking bright! What's even better is that many of these things can be used or tested and contributed to today. Come learn a bit more about the major focus areas of Plone 4 and how they connect to where we are today. ========= Meeting Logistics ========= Wednesday, April 22nd, 6:00 P.M. to 8:00ish P.M. The ROI Case for Alternative Messaging Systems ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This white paper, sponsored by Ipswitch, offers an overview of the key features that will meet the needs of most smaller organizations, and it offers a compelling Return-on-Investment (ROI) model for smaller organizations. It also provides some information on Ipswitch's alternative to Exchange, IMail Server v11. Click here to download this white paper Comparing the Cost of Email Systems ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This white paper, sponsored by Novell, discusses the impact that labor and downtime can have on the total cost of managing a messaging system. Osterman Research conducted independent research to understand the cost of ownership for various email systems. This white paper presents the results of that research, as well as our analysis of what we think it means for organizations that are considering whether or not they should retain their current email environment or deploy a new one. Click here to download this white paper Reducing Messaging & Web Security Costs With Managed Services ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Security threats facing organizations of all sizes are getting worse: email spam volumes are rising, malware is becoming more sophisticated, Web-borne threats are becoming more numerous and more damaging, and malware developers are getting smarter and are developing more stealthy ways of penetrating corporate defenses. Organizations of all sizes, even very large ones, are turning to managed services to deal with the threat of spam, malware and Web security issues. Click here to download this white paper Webinar Today on the Latest Messaging Security Threats ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Join our Webinar partner QLM, Messaging News and XO Concentric on May 6, 2009 at 2pm EDT, 11am PDT, for an interactive Webinar about one of the hottest topics in messaging today, identifying and countering the latest messaging security threats in 2009. I would think it all the more important to migrate to a platform that has long-term support, and to avoid locking in with one particular vendor (neither Microsoft nor Novell). It's an added benefit that most of the Linux OS and applications are available at no cost to purchase. Support costs are less too, and you have the choice of support vendor, unlike for commercial OSes. You give a perfect example of suffering from vendor lock-in: "Netware has left me and the fact that Novell is no longer producing new versions was their choice, not mine." Microsoft is no different. MS-Server 2008 will someday reach end-of-life, and you'll be forced to buy all new hardware in order to run the newest offerings. I'll bet that the bulk of your computing needs are for standard office productivity: Payroll, HR, CRM, and the standard desktop applications of word processor, spreadsheet, e-mail and maybe Web browsing. I'll bet that you can meet all your computing needs with Linux-based software. Yes, there is some cost to switching platforms, but I'll also bet that the cost to switch to Linux today is less than the cost of upgrading to Microsoft licenses, not to mention the Microsoft licence renewal costs year after year. --Bob. -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= www.psnug.org Puget Sound Network Users Group Building Technical Skills Through Teamwork And Education. Linux kernel - the very latest as of June -this month 2.6.30 (Brandon's openSUSE 2.6.27.23) - SMP up to 4,000 cpu support - yes, the kernel on your computer. (some super computers booting up 8,000 cpu -improvements just keep coming) On average 11,700 lines of code patched in the kernel equals 5,500 lines removed, 2,200 lines modified and about 4,000 new lines of code. Every day for the last year. i.e. about 5.4 patches per hour for 24 hours 7 days a week. About 125 patches per day. So every day, an IBM employee in Australia, I think, compiles over 40 kernels for various hardware platforms http://tldp.org/FAQ/Linux-FAQ/kernel.html#does-linux-run-on-my-computer Motorola cell phones mostly use Linux, for example. And these kernels are tested and any broken parts removed, and on to the next days release. So for the last year, a new "stable kernel release" every 11 weeks 2.6.29 to 2.6.30 took about 11 weeks (the goal was every 12 weeks) Just under 4,000 kernel developers at this time. Every line of about 11,800,000 lines of code in the current kernel source code shows TWO names and dates; First who submitted the patch, and the date, then who of 12 sub-system maintainers accepts the patch and that date. So it is easy to send notice of problems back to the sub-system and the actual programmer. About 5 years ago, the patch rate was 1.5 patches per hour. The entire process continues to increase in rate. another view of kernel stats http://lwn.net/Articles/334721/ -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= www.psnug.org Puget Sound Network Users Group Building Technical Skills Through Teamwork And Education.
