Message-ID: <948F5C84-5569-48E4-8DA4-986CC147FC78@comcast.net> As you probably know I listen (and watch) a lot of podcasts. One of my favorites is geekbrief, found at geekbrief.tv or iTunes store. The host, Cali Lewis (yeah, stage name) is more than just another pretty face and provides serious tech-toys information. Brief 439 featured a neat feedthrough scanner called appropriately enough neat receipts. The price is kind of high for a scanner ($179 list) but is compelling nonetheless. It's dominant feature is receipt recognition and import - into spreadsheets, quicken, turbotax and more. If, like me you end up with a weekly pile of receipts to enter this just may save some time and certainly aggravation. I may be able to (finally) get my wife to enter her own receipts! It's not just a one-trick pony, having the ability to scan generalized documents and pictures but the integration makes a compelling argument for inclusion in my tech budget. See you in 3 weeks! He will talk about factors to consider in moving to hosted solutions and how to best prepare for a smooth transition. Many companies have made the switch to Software- as-a-Service, but the decision can seem daunting. You might ask, what control am I giving up? Will it be less flexible? What about security? Do the savings outweigh the effort of making a transition? And, of course, how will my end users adjust to a new way of doing things? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Webinar will be held on Thursday, October 9th ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will focus on the business problems that SaaS messaging and collaboration tools address, the factors to consider in moving to a hosted solution, what you might lose and what you might gain in switching to a SaaS model, what selection criteria you should apply in evaluating SaaS vendors, and what Google Apps has to offer. Sadly, this may never happen again, or at least not until kernel mets back in the USA. This was apparently the first time hardware driver people had gotten together - and anyone could go, they just needed to pay. A gal from Intel organized - she didn't realize how much work it would be, even riding on the coat tails of the kernel.org - Linux Foundation people. IF you write drivers and want to meet the maintainers of your particular driver set - then I would think a must go. People came from all over the world. Fellow from France, works for Air Bus, they won't send him, he left his family at home and came on his own expense. That seemed amazing to me - and there were a lot of other amazing people there. Another fellow from TI - to show driver writers what are the new hardware trends for video hardware - now Texas Instruments I paid him to come, he was from India. And everything in between. Ubuntu and RedHat were both looking for kernel developers to hire. And I was pleasantly surprised to see the Ubuntu guys stay after getting exposed for their lack of contributions - we shall see if this shames :Ubuntu into really joining the community and helping out - at least as much as the Debian people - check Linux Foundation for kernel report and see who the contributors really are - individuals still do the most work. http://www.linuxfoundation.org/publications/linuxkerneldevelopment.php The above URL you'll also find the top 30 companies/organizations who sponsor kernel work. OK, I have rambled enough - if you remember, ask me about LPC the next time we meet up. Right now I'm in Daytona Beach, FL looking after my very ill mother, so not sure exactly what date I'll be back. PS - I'd keep an eye on the Linux Foundation events - and I would consider GOSCON as it happens in this region - too bad OSCON has moved to San Jose. You'll find some links to these and other events at below web-site. any corrections, suggestions, or even help to maintain or add content welcome ANYONE, Please, feel free to visit any PSNUG meeting as my personal guest - even if I'm not in town, just tell them you are my guest, nice guys, free food - you'll find the details if you look. -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= www.psnug.org Puget Sound Network Users Group Building Technical Skills Through Teamwork And Education. The presenter (stage name Cali Lewis) is young, pretty and spunky - but makes up for it by being smart and well informed. Brief 480 included a blurb on a NAS adapter dongle from Addonics ( http://www.addonics.com/products/nas/ nasu2.asp ). A micro sized adapter, barely larger than the USB port on one end and RJ45/power plug on the other, it turns any USB storage device into network attached storage accessible through SMB/SAMBA or ftp. At $55 it's worth a look.
