Message-ID: <609b18560807021119x7b6d685fx216741d3198ca7eb@mail.gmail.com>
There are some consumers (adopters) that might prefer the taste (and low
cost) of wild honey (Open Source) and are happy to go to the effort of
collecting it and processing it for themselves. However, if they do not want
to take the time or the risk to do so instead they might pay a *honey
collector* (support provider) to do the job for them.

WSJ Interview with MySQL Mikos
*BUSINESS INSIGHT:* *And what is their [contributors] motivation, as far as
you can tell?*
*MR. MICKOS:* Those who contribute to us are as selfish as anybody else.
There's rarely any charitable aspect of this. Their No. 1 reason is that
they are contributing so that they will get, in return, a better-functioning
product. They are looking after their own business interests. No. 2, and
almost equally important, is their desire to build a reputation for
themselves. We will say publicly what they have done. So they get great
recognition for being smart engineers and brilliant programmers. That gives
them better job offers and it gives them a feeling of usefulness in the
world. They get a lot of emotional and practical benefits.
*BUSINESS INSIGHT:* *Couldn't a potential competitor use your code as a
starting point to get into the business -- and crush you?*
*MR. MICKOS:* Even if someone studied us in tiny detail, I don't think they
could really match us. We've shown them our code, and nobody has been able
to measure up against what we have.
*BUSINESS INSIGHT:* *Why is that?*
*MR. MICKOS:* Even if I showed you my DNA, you wouldn't know how to become
me.

Why should Brandon have all the forwarding fun? (grin)
The lead article is typical, although it isn't exactly the first time
an RFID 'security' device was quickly or easily compromised. The real
problem is, of course that a card can be cracked at a distance; I
seriously question the wisdom of using autosending broadcast radio to
transmit a security key.

Are you contemplating biometrics? Alone? Maybe you should reconsider,
although I don't think he has addressed the primary problem.

Hi
Are you attending OSCON in Portland this year? Let me know. I'll be
hanging around the sessions and our expo hall booth.
Can you pass this note along to your members who are going to OSCON?
Got any old O'Reilly shirts at home? If so, bring them to OSCON! Be one
of the first 50 people to come by the O'Reilly booth (#313) wearing one of
our t-shirts to win cool prizes and be included in our t-shirt photo
collage. The grand prize goes to the person who has more O'Reilly shirts
than everyone else, so bring 'em all!
Follow the O'Reilly booth on Twitter during the conference:
http://twitter.com/oreillyatoscon for your chance to win prizes during
the show.
You can also follow http://twitter.com/oscon for ongoing conference
updates throughout the show.
Thanks for your help,
Marsee

Linux Plumbers Conference
17-19 September 2008
Portland, Oregon USA
http://linuxplumbersconf.org/
Speaker Proposal Submission Deadline Extended
The deadline for Linux Plumbers Conference speaker proposals has been
extended to July 31st. We are looking for proposals from knowledgeable
speakers on timely technical topics related to core Linux software -
kernel, utilities, graphics, libraries, etc. The ideal proposal will
address a specific technical problem or opportunity and suggest
solutions. Proposals targeting issues which cross sub-system
boundaries - such as power management and suspend/resume - are
especially encouraged. Talks will be 25 minutes or less and serve as
a starting point for round-table discussion.
LPC is an opportunity to work on technical problems face-to-face with
other developers, especially between developers who seldom attend the
same conference or summit. The conference is organized into small
working groups - microconferences - focusing on specific topics, such
as storage, power management, and graphics. One conference track is
reserved for talks not part of microconferences and new
microconferences, created as needed by popular demand.
Submissions are encouraged for all Linux "plumbing" related topics,
not just the topics of the microconferences. Example topics:
* Networking architecture
* Wireless utilities and infrastructure
* Tools for optimizing embedded Linux applications
* Integration of system libraries, window managers, and the kernel
* Network file systems and utilities
* Support for upcoming hardware features
* Real-time/low latency
Current microconference topics include:
* The future of Linux storage
* Video input infrastructure and V4L2
* Power management and tools for efficient resource usage
* Future displays and input devices
* Dbus for desktop integration
* Linux server management
* XCB and graphics
* Audio
* Kernel/userspace interfaces
* Debugging, tuning, tracing, and profiling
If in doubt about the appropriateness of your topic for LPC, please
submit anyway.
Speakers will receive free registration to the conference, which
includes access to all technical sessions, the joint Kernel Summit and
LPC party on Tuesday night, and an evening reception sponsored by
Intel.
For details on submission format, see our call for speakers:
http://linuxplumbersconf.org/cfp/
Sponsors
Major sponsors of the Linux Plumbers Conference include Intel, IBM,
and NetApp. The LPC is underwritten by the Linux Foundation. LPC is
a revenue-neutral event.

has (get this) 14 tracks ongoing tomorrow... unbelievable amount of content.
OSCON organizer have not overlapped sessions with keynotes (like they do at
Interop) so I'm grateful for that.
Highlights for me at this early stage include Unbuntu's Mark Shuttleworth's
keynote on Tuesday night (and i'm meeting with Jono Bacon this aft so that
should be fun too), Chris DiBona of Google talking about the latest and
greatest from their group, Dave Ascher from Mozilla Messaging on Mozilla 3,
Nat Friedman from Novell, and EnterpriseDB's new CEO Ed Boyajian are just a
few of the well known names I'm looking forward to seeing...It should be a
blast!

URUGUAY ADOPTS ODF AS RECOMMENDED STANDARD
Uruguay's AGESIC (Agency for the Development of Government Electronic
Management and Information and Knowledge Society), which is responsible for
proposing IT standards for the federal government, has officially
recommended the use of ODF for editable documents and PDF for documents in
final, published form. ODF has now firmly taken root in South America, with
Uruguay joining Brazil and several regional governments, including Parana
(Brazil) and Misiones (Argentina), as ODF adopters.

NATO TO SUPPORT THE USE OF ODF
NATO has included ODF in its list of mandatory standards to promote
interoperability. Also included under NATO's Interoperability Standards and
Profiles are Rich Text Format (RTF), extensible markup language (XML) and
Office XP formats as requirements for the sharing of data. The list does not
include Microsoft's Office Open XML (OOXML).

CANADIAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION RECOMMENDS ODF
Citing the preservation of and long-term access to government information as
vital in a democratic society, the Canadian Library Association (CLA)
adopted a resolution urging the federal government to mandate the use of
open, interoperable, and vendor-neutral standards such as ODF for government
information wherever possible and encourages other library-related
organizations to do the same at all levels of government. CLA also made
known its support for the Standards Council of Canada's opposition to
Microsoft's OOXML.

Subject: RE: Vista ?

As a system builder let me make a suggestion. If you order Vista
Business you are entitled to a downgrade to Windows XP Pro if you
currently own Windows XP Pro on another system. This does mean you
would need to reload the system but you should consider this fact. If
in the future you should decide to use Vista Business you won't need to
purchase an upgrade for those systems, just put Vista back on them!
This downgrade is only applicable to Vista Business and Vista Ultimate.
It will only allow a downgrade to XP Pro not XP Home or Media Center.
To downgrade you will need to install Windows XP Pro using the license
from another system. DO NOT ACTIVATE THAT LICENSE. Call Microsoft and
request a new code for that system. Tell them you are downgrading.
They will ask for the Vista code. Give it to them and they should give
you the new code.
This is perfectly legal. The important thing is not activating the XP
license that you use to install the downgrade. If you do it may affect
the system that XP Pro is currently installed on.

Featured Speakers at Linux Plumbers Conference
The Linux Plumbers Conference is pleased to announce two featured
speakers for the upcoming conference. Greg Kroah-Hartman will give
the conference keynote, speaking about the Linux ecosystem and why it
matters. Jonathan Corbet will give a featured talk entitled "The
Kernel Report," which will include results from the Kernel Summit,
held just prior to LPC.
Greg Kroah-Hartman is a Novell Fellow in the SuSE Labs division and
maintains many crucial subsystems in the Linux kernel. Greg founded
and runs the Linux Driver Project, which writes and maintains drivers
for hardware vendors at no cost. Greg is an experienced speaker whose
hard-hitting talks often drive the technical and political direction
of Linux. Greg's speaking credits include the keynote speech for
Ottawa Linux Symposium 2006, "3 Myths, 2 Lies, and 5 Truths about
Linux Kernel Development," and "State of the Linux Kernel" at OSCON
2004-2007. Greg will also be running the "User and Kernel Interfaces"
microconference at LPC.
Jonathan Corbet is the editor-in-chief of Linux Weekly News, a Linux
kernel developer, and chronicler of many past Kernel Summits.
Jonathan will give the Kernel Report, presenting the key results of
the 2008 Kernel Summit and his thoughts on the current state of Linux
development and where it may be heading in the near future.
Early Bird Registration Deadline
The registration fee for Linux Plumbers Conference is $250 until
August 18th, when it will increase to $300. Speakers get free
registration and speakers who register before accepted talks are
announced will have their registration fee refunded in full. Register

Conference Wiki Open
The wiki for Linux Plumbers Conference is now open:
http://wiki.linuxplumbersconf.org/
The wiki is for conference members to organize meetings, ad-hoc
technical sessions, and meet-ups in "unconference" style. It can also
be used to organize social events, bicycle rides, and excursions to
the wide variety of Portland dining and drinking establishments.
About the conference
The Linux Plumbers Conference is a developer conference for the open
source community. LPC brings together the top developers working on
the "plumbing" of Linux - kernel subsystems, core libraries, windowing
system, etc. - and gives them three days to work together on core
design problems. LPC is co-located with and held directly following
the 2008 Kernel Summit, in Portland, Oregon.
Major sponsors of the Linux Plumbers Conference include Intel, IBM,
and NetApp. The LPC is underwritten by the Linux Foundation. LPC is
a revenue-neutral event.

Hi everyone,
I'm happy to announce that the next Greater Seattle Linux User's Group

For those of you who weren't there, the address is:
Speakeasy, Inc.
1201 Western Ave, Seattle WA
We're meeting in a conference room on the 7th floor. Let someone in the

As usual, all information can be found on the wiki:

If you'd like to give a talk (and I hope you do) or are just planning to
attend, please RSVP by adding yourself to the wiki page.
Let me know if you have any questions, I look forward to seeing everyone
this weekend!
And if you're looking for internet, phone, or other networking services,
take a look athttp://www.speakeasy.net/. Be sure to thank them for

Hello,
Just a quick note to let you know that we are looking for private beta testers for Riva GroupWise Integration for SageCRM. I would appreciate your help in spreading the word. If you know of anyone you think might be interested in being a Riva SageCRM beta tester, please forward this email to them.
Riva CRM Integration for GroupWise runs on Linux or Windows. You can beta test either or both the Single-user Desktop Edition or the Enterprise Edition. You will need at least GroupWise 7.0.3 with SOAP enabled on the post office of users who are testing. It doesn't matter what server OS you run GroupWise on. There are no client side restrictions. Your CRM synchronised information is transparently available on all GroupWise clients: Windows, Mac, Linux, WebAccess, BES, GMS, Outlook, Evolution, ...
If you and/or your company are interested, please send me an email off-list with your contact information. We support SageCRM versions 6.x.
Riva GroupWise Integration for SageCRM provides the same advanced SmartConvert, ConnectBar and transparent bi-directional address book and calendar synchronisation functionality as Riva for our other supported CRMs (Salesforce, Microsoft CRM, Microsoft SharePoint, Info at hand, SugarCRM and Bluefin CRM).
We host regularly scheduled web seminars and also have On-demand Webcasts of the Riva Overview and Integrated CRM Client if you want more information:

Google to mobilize public support for unused portions of TV spectrum for
unlicensed Internet devices and expanded broadband access.
Broadcasters oppose the plans by Google and other tech companies such as
Microsoft, Motorola and Hewlett-Packard, arguing that unlicensed use would
interfere with their signals, distort TV pictures for millions of viewers,
and give tech giants free use of the spectrum.

Subject: [PSNUG.org News] Ethernet Switches - big savings?
Message-ID: <609b18560808261159o45e2c04p35579605d25e98ed@mail.gmail.com>
Instead of investing in specialty gear, such as 10 Gigabit Ethernet switches
and routers , and using a
standard three-tier architecture, Vahdat says companies could use commodity
Ethernet switches in a "fat-tree" architecture at a much lower cost to
achieve the same performance. Anecdotally he explains a 20,000 node network
using pricey switches could cost as much as $28 million to construct; with
commodity gear, the same network would ring up at closer to $4 million.
reminder: Google servers only use 10Mb NICs - they don't want/need a single
server to clog a 100Mb connection, let alone a Gb connection.

Message-ID: <48B5CD2D.0D8B.00D2.3@wccg.net>
For that of you that couldn't make it to this evening meeting I have a special offer to pass along to you.
Steve Johnson, Senior Code Geek from Metageek put on a great presentation of their Wi-Spy 2.4x spectrum monitoring tool. http://www.metageek.net/products/wi-spy24x
I think Ed even had fun turning the microwave oven on and off so he could see the spectrum real time on the screen on the other end of the room.
The folks at Metageek have extended a very kind, limited time offer to PSNUG, a 20% discount on the Wi-Spy 2.4x. Just enter the coupon code: PSNUG at checkout. This coupon code will work for just one week so best count your penny's soon and place the order ;+)
See you next month.
Take care.

Yet another reason to start using OpenOffice.org or Sun StarOffice or Novell
version - they are all share the same basic code.
_____________________________________________
The significance of OOXML as a standard is waning:
Microsoft does *not* expect to make its current generation of office
productivity software, Office 2007, compliant with the ISO/IEC version of
OOXML.
Microsoft plans instead to add compatibility with ISO/IEC 26300 OpenDocument
Format standard used by OpenOffice.org, Sun Microsystems' StarOffice and
IBM's Symphony software

Subject: [PSNUG.org News] GroupWise 8 in Public BETA!!

Introducing GroupWise 8!!
Public beta of Bonsai is here! Also the code name is gone ? the
next
version of GroupWise is officially GroupWise 8! Please download it
at the following link:
www.novell.com/groupwisebeta
Along with our authorized beta sites, our internal Novell IS&T team
and
several customers and partners, we are pleased to bring you a very
solid, well tested and superbly engineered update to the Novell
Collaboration family. As preparation for public beta, GroupWise has
gone through an extensive round of testing, validation and automated
review. Here are a few highlights:
Automation: The Quality Control team has continued an effort to
automate several of our test cases and testing processes. The
automated tests are run everyday as soon as a new build of the code
with
the latest changes is complete. The automated test cases continue
to
expand in number and coverage. They are our first indication that
we
have a solid build on a daily basis. The automation test cases have
not failed once in the last 45 days.
Test Cases: The testing organization has written and executed over
9000 test cases, many of them multiple times in order to catch
regressions and ensure quality. The P1 test cases represent about
8300
of the overall test case database and were recently executed again as
part of our public beta preparedness. Those test cases passed at 93%.
Engineering has already fixed several of the issues that were
uncovered
by those test cases and we will target the rest of them to be resolved
before FCS.
Authorized BETA sites: We have had excellent participation from the
50+ authorized beta sites. They recommended and approved that we
move
onto public beta. Several of the beta sites have already deployed
GroupWise 8 into their production systems and environments. Their
participation, input and testing has been invaluable and they have
helped shape the product as well as find issues and validate
scenarios.
Internal Rollout: Our own IS&T department has been very aggressive
in
making sure that GroupWise 8 is rolled out and being used by Novell as
a
corporation. We have almost every Post Offices inside of Novell
running GroupWise 8 on Linux and Netware. (Over 20 in all) Those
post
offices are located in Provo, Waltham, Europe and Asia. We also have
MTAs, two of our main GWIAs and WebAccess all running GroupWise 8.
Over 4000 employees are on a Bonsai post office while just over 400
are
currently using a Bonsai client (Windows, Linux, Mac and WebAccess).
We expect to expand this rapidly over the next few weeks.
Quality Metrics: As mentioned in a few of my blog posts, Novell is
pushing every product line to increase their quality and to be able to
measure it. One of those metrics is based on the severity of
bugs/defects found and fixed in the product. Here are some of the
metrics that represent the state of the GroupWise 8 public beta code,
including the public beta goals.
Critial bugs: 91% resolved - 90% is the goal for public beta
Major bugs: 93% resolved - 85% is the goal for public beta
Normal bugs: 75% resolved ? 75% is the goal for public beta
Minor bugs: 75% resolved ? 50% is the goal for public beta
Lighthouse Project: Novell is also sponsoring an early adopter
program. We have 12 customers that have agreed to rollout GroupWise
8
into production with the public beta code. This will provide real
world experience and help us gauge our readiness for final shipment.
In all, including Novell, its beta sites and the Lighthouse program,
there should be almost 10,000 people using GroupWise 8, in production,
by the time we ship the final version.
We are confident that you will find GroupWise 8 to be very solid,
well-tested and with more new features than any previous release of
GroupWise. I k
now that we will not satisfy everyone, but I am
confident that there is something in this release of GroupWise that
will
make it a ?must? upgrade for you and your organization.
Check out the ?What?s New? section of the documentation to find
your
favorite feature.
http://www.novell.com/documentation/gw8
During the final push before final shipment, we will continue to
polish
and make it shine. Please help us by participating in the public
beta and by providing feedback.
Enjoy!!

ETech 2009 now. Deadline for proposals is September 17.
*The future is waiting, but not for long!*
If you are working on the next big technological breakthrough, we want to
hear from you, and soon. The deadline for submitting a proposal is September
17. After that, the future just might take place without you.
We're especially interested in demonstrations of technologies that will help
us transition from a consumer culture fueled by cheap energy and focused on
material plenty to one focused on sustainable living for everyone. How will
emerging technologies sustain our quality of life on the planet?
We want to hear from inventors, entrepreneurs, visionaries, sustainability
designers, technologists, resource strategists, coders, and hackers who want
to change the way world works.
Submit a proposal
This year we're looking for new approaches and breakthrough ideas in these
exciting new areas:
- *City Tech*
Suddenly cities are fashionable and exurbs look like a failed idea. Can
technology can create a livable, prosperous, sustainable city? Does the
density of infrastructure represent a solution? Will shared citizen data
make cities smarter? Is there a future for the megalopolis?
- *Sustainable Living*
Clean tech promises a bright green future for our homes, our cars, our
way of life. Which emerging technologies are poised to deliver a brighter,
greener future? What can we learn from Europe? What technologies are
currently taking shape in the sustainable cities of Dubai?
- *Personalized Healthcare*
In the future, we'll be more responsible for our health and our
healthcare than ever before. What are the breakthroughs in technology,
genomics, medicine, anti-aging, drug development and delivery that will make
a difference in extending our lives and enhancing our quality of life?
- *Synthetic Biology*
Can you build a better molecule? Deliver DNA sequencing faster, cheaper,
and more accurately? Redesign bacterium? Exploit the behavior of
intracellular physics? The new field of Synthetic Biology designs and
fabricates biological components and systems for use in engineering
applications. How will advances in Synthetic Biology effectively harness the
power of the living world?
- *Mobile Web*
Mobile telephony is reshaping the way we think about productivity,
connectivity, and entertainment. The next billion web users will connect to
the Internet on their cell phone. iPhone, Google, and Nokia are bringing
smarter clients to the masses, delivering enormous data sets and massive
functionality on a miniaturized screen. Where will the business
opportunities come from? How will we use the data collected to augment our
view of the world?
- *Geek Family*
Digital native mothers and fathers are starting their own families. How
is that changing home technology? Education technology? What does the future
geek home look like and how does it function?
Next generation ideas start at ETech 2009, be part of the future.

Online Registration Closes Friday
Online registration for Linux Plumbers Conference closes Friday,
September 12th, or when the limit of 300 attendees has been reached,
whichever comes first. Register here:
http://www.linuxplumbersconf.org/register/
If you plan to attend, we recommend registering as soon as possible as
the conference is nearly sold out.
Regular registration fee is $300, which includes access to the entire
technical program, the joint Kernel Summit/Linux Plumbers Conference
party on Tuesday night, and the Wednesday reception. The student
registration fee is $50.

Subject: TAPCUG Laptop
From: "NEIL STAHFEST"

While setting up for the Open Lab session this morning, I discovered
that TAPCUG's laptop compute would not power up. I unplugged the
external power cable and plugged it back in, checked to see that the
power strip in the cabinet was energized (it was), and removed the
battery and replaced it. No joy. The computer simply wont turn on.
Possible causes; the external power supply isn't working and the
internal battery is discharged, the problem is something inside the
computer.
The laptop worked when I demoed the Disk of the Month at the August
General Meeting. During today's Open Lab, Jim Cosgrove dropped by for
something and mentioned that the laptop would not power up when he tried
to use it during his last S.I.G. meeting (on Sept 5?). I didn't use it
for the Flight Simulator S.I.G. on Aug 29 (I used my own laptop).
- Neil
P.S. I thought about connecting one of the Senior Center's new computers
to our p[roject for the Open Lab today but I couldn't find a DVI to VGA
adapter their PC to our projector.

Hello everyone.
Has this been a short month or something? The next PSNUG meeting is only one week away.
Our presenter this time will be Daniel Meade, Outside Territory Manager for Barracuda Networks. He will be giving us an introduction to Barracuda's products followed by some demos.
A few months ago, I installed my first Barracuda Spam Firewall appliance and was please with the install and my customer is happy with it's performance. It will be interesting to hear about Barracuda's other products.
If you have a specific question or product for Daniel send it on to me and I will pass it along to him.
See you next week.
