Now that Christmas and New Year festivities are complete its back to business. As I'm a member of ngwlist I thought I would reply to your messages via the list. Thanks for your comments about my presentation at the GroupWise Summit in Bruges. I am hoping that I can make use of the material in some way to promote GroupWise further, and I'm now talking to Novell about how to progress things. I really want the audience to be managers/architects/decision makers as much as techies and system administrators, and go beyond the GroupWise community. There's not much point (is there?) in telling GroupWise enthusiasts how good the product is and why it remains a serious alternative to MS-Exchange. If you're in a company looking for a new messaging and collaboration system then there are a number of requirements that must be met. From where I stand having experience in GroupWise and latterly Exchange then I can say that GroupWise is a real alternative that has many of the answers people are looking for. The issue is that when you're in third place (as GroupWise is) then you need to heavily advertise your product to keep it in the eye of your market. (Who can name the third man to set foot on the moon? Well it was Pete Conrad and he was a highly accomplished astronaut but I guess many people have forgotten his amazing mission back in November 1969. OK quiz over!) I hope 2008 will be a successful year for GroupWise and look forward to seeing v8 released. Microsoft to buy Norwegian search engine company for $1.2 billion By The Associated Press OSLO, Norway - Microsoft agreed today to buy search engine company Fast Search & Transfer for $1.2 billion, adding software products that help companies trawl for information on the Internet. The offer of $2.97 a share is a 42 percent premium to the Norwegian company's recent average share price, and caused the stock to soar by nearly the same amount in early trading on the Oslo stock exchange. Fast's board unanimously recommended that shareholders accept the offer, a news release said. Fast, founded in 1997 in Oslo, specializes in tailored Web searches that allow major companies, from freight to telecommunications, to store and manage information. "Enterprise search is becoming an indispensable tool to businesses of all sizes, helping people find, use and share critical business information quickly," Jeff Raikes, president of the Microsoft Business Division, said in a joint news release. "Until now organizations have been forced to choose between powerful, high-end search technologies or more mainstream, infrastructure solutions. The combination of Microsoft and Fast gives customers a new choice: a single vendor with solutions that span the full range of customer needs." Conditions of the offer include acceptance by at least 90 percent of Fast's shareholders under the terms of a formal offer to be made next week, the statement from the two companies said. The two largest institutional shareholders, Norway's Orkla and Hermes Focus Asset Management Europe, have already accepted the offer, and the companies aim to complete the sale during the second quarter. Fast's chief executive, John Lervik, said becoming part of Microsoft "gives Fast an exciting way to spread our cutting-edge search technologies and innovations to more and more organizations across the world." The GWAVACon Marriott Conference hotel is also sold out. You can visit http://www.gwavacon.com/na/san_diego_book_hotel_2008.php to find out information about the hotels that are across the street. GWAVACon Shuttle service is being provided by Blue Shuttle. You have to register online to take advantage of this. Going back to the airport will be a lot easier since there will be a lot of people going together. BTW, a taxi is $60 one way. Currently the registration and total attendance is just shy of 500. This is going to be a really big event. Also, for those who can't attend, we will be broadcasting GWAVACon Live on GWAVA TV. Simply put, VOIP is placing and receiving voice calls using technology developed for the internet. In practice, it applies to a multitude of new technologies where voice communications previously carried over the public switched telephone network (PSTN), and data communications designed for internet and computers - merge. Changes which began in large enterprise systems and phone carrier networks are transforming options for individual users with internet based calling services. While some of these have been transparent to the end user, many are not. * What do enterprises and individuals have in common more than most small businesses? * Which aspects of VOIP impact users? * Is now the right time to replace your company's phone system and if so, what are the options? * Is the reliability there for individuals or businesses using internet based calling services? * What is E911 and how does it impact VOIP? * What are the costs/benefits of VOIP based phone switches vs. traditional hybrid phone systems? * What are the implications if you choose VOIP on data networking and architecture? * What are the considerations for choosing carriers and service plans? My suggestions. - use your vendor industry contacts - AMD for example - see if you can get them to make presentation, supply items for raffle or give-a-ways - (smaller/local vendors who might also benefit from contacts they might make). (many of your vendors - again AMD - may already be actively using open source) - use your customer contacts to let them know about the show - I think a great family event, nice lunches, fun to visit area, radio museum great! - good project for your kids, get them involved search out "Bellingham Museums" example of what you'll find - but let the kids do the searching and help with the planning - can you tell I'm not a parent myself?? AND we shouldn't forget to promote the ones that host the event and have worked so hard to make this one of the best technical trade events/shows you'll find most anywhere - not a lot of flash - just solid in depth introductions to open source paradigm. http://www.btc.ctc.edu/ -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= www.psnug.org Puget Sound Network Users Group Building Technical Skills Through Teamwork And Education. Message-ID: <55A92AE7-1B70-43EA-BC8E-F50A7A77DA90@comcast.net> Not merely the usual reminder but something new - we have a fantastic door prize! Some may know that NUI (Novell Users, International) has recently gone back in-house at Novell. As part of this they are providing us a new web presence; I'll try to have that updated tonight. The big news is thanks to Brandon Fouts we qualified (like many other chapters) for 2 free tickets to Brainshare! One goes to the President with instructions to bestow the second as we see fit. The best possible use being to promote the organization we decided to use it as a door prize at the next meeting, Jan 30. Naturally the prize is for admission only - you'll need to arrange transportation and accommodations. If you ever wanted to see what all the fuss is about, need to puzzle out some interesting bit of Novell technology (like Zenworks, SUSE Linux, Identity Manger) or just have an excuse to visit SLC this is for you. Agenda 6:00 pre meeting, food arrives shortly after 6:30 Meeting called to order Introductions old business new business Linuxfest 2008 Door prize giveaway 7:00 - Steve Stroh on Wireless 8:30 - Job board, Q & A 9:00 - adjourn Randy Grein, Master CNE, CCNA From brando.fouts at gmail.com Thu Jan 24 12:46:55 2008 From: brando.fouts at gmail.com (Brandon Fouts) Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2008 12:46:55 -0800 Subject: [PSNUG.org News] LFNW presentations and exhibits Message-ID: <609b18560801241246j22a16e8sd37f59be828d361f@mail.gmail.com> Please help spread the word - for both presentations and exhibitors. Major developments and milestones for ODF in 2007 included: *The Netherlands and South Africa adopted policies requiring ODF's use by government agencies, joining ten other countries that had already done so. *ODF software support grew rapidly to include over 40 applications, with more than a dozen announcements of new or improved support during the months of September and October alone. *The OASIS OpenDocument Technical Committee, which maintains the ODF specification, reached consensus about extensible metadata for the upcoming ODF v1.2 specification, which among these and many other new features will come with digital-signature support. Details such as cost per person (we're trying to keep this as low as possible), exact location in Seattle, and timing will be announced as soon as possible! To wet your appetite, here's a report on a similar talk from Noah Gift of the Python group in Atlanta as posted on oreillynet.com: One of the more dramatic, show and tell, pieces, was a local demonstration of their "theme trac like Plone trick". The crowd was blown away, when Tres and Chris stole, borrowed, pick your favorite word, the pyatl plone 3.0site, and themed a localhost trac instance. We also saw a great debugging middleware WSGI tool, that "leaked" objects in the WSGI stack. WSGI is truly an incredible technology, and I am so excited about it, I almost can't sleep. Welcome to ICEcore! ICEcore is the culmination of 3 years of development effort by SiteScape, a leader software solutions for team collaboration, and has been released under the open source CPAL license. Everyone is free to download, use, and modify to their hearts content. However, we hope you'll try us out, like us, and come back and help us develop ICEcore into something we can't even imagine yet. ICEcore is the first Open Source project to fully integrate team workspaces and real-time conferencing in a single, integrated collaboration environment. It provides all the tools knowledge workers demand most -- blogs, wikis, discussion threads, workflow, document management, file stores, RSS feeds and more. ICEcore helps organizations achieve true collaboration and transform social networking into a competitive advantage. In addition, by using ICEcore Conference users can take advantage of ICEcore's "presence" feature, team members can check if people are available, then meet using instant messaging to examine content, discuss issues, and reach consensus. ICEcore Team is a JSR168 compliant portlet that runs in the Liferay Portal Server and uses many open source components such as Java, Hibernate, Spring, MySQL, and many others. The ICEcore Conference Server is a C and C++ application that integrates with all major IM clients and also supports Real-time application sharing and presence indicators in the ICEcore Team product. ICEcore Conference is also built on popular open source software such as wxWidgets, openssl, and Jabber. This website and our community are built using the ICEcore Team collaboration software. Our software will feel slightly different if you are used to other open source collaboration environments like SourceForge or Freshmeat, however once you try it you'll never want to go back to other ways of collaborating for open source development. One difference you'll notice right away is that we don't use traditional mailing lists, if you want to stay informed about what is happening in the ICEcore Community you simply subscribe to a folder. Subscribing to a folder is similar to subscribing to a mailing list but is completely configurable in when you get notices of new activity. Also, a neat feature that we think you'll like is that when you submit a question in our forums you can subscribe to only that particular entry, so instead on wading through lots of unrelated information from the forum you're only notified when someone responds to your particular issue. An if that's not enough if you register as a member of the community you'll get access to customized information related to bugs you've filed or code you've submitted. It's a great way to stay informed of the status of the project and we think you'll like it alot. However, we do want to note that we are just kicking off our developer community and may not have thought of everything (in fact we're sure we didn't), do we want your input on what we can do better. If you think of something you'd like to see changed or added on the website, let us know. -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= www.psnug.org Puget Sound Network Users Group Building Technical Skills Through Teamwork And Education. It is more than a nice addition to our flagship, personal productivity tool, GroupWise. - It shows the commitment of Novell to our customers for our collaboration products. - MOMENTUM.... this commitment is a signal of the strength of the business. GroupWise grew 7% last year. This product has been building momentum for 6 quarters now. It is a very healthy business. When a product builds momentum, a company can increase it's investment. New things can start to happen. New innovation for our customers in both the teaming products and GroupWise. This product and business is really taking off - Executive visibility and increased press... Ron is very excited about the prospects of our collaboration products. I spent two days with him after GWAVACon a few weeks back as he talked to the press. Novell Teaming + Conferencing and GroupWise got a tremendous amount of air time. CxO level people see and hear this and realize the jewel they have in GroupWise and the next generation of complimentary collaboration tools. - Customers see they now have an alternative to SharePoint at a lower cost, that is open source/open standards and enables them to build upon their previous investment in GroupWise. - Now that Novell owns the Product, we can now form even closer relations with a very talented team at Sitescape. The Workgroup leadership is doing a tremendous job and working very hard to meet the needs of our customers and partners. I enjoyed working with them as they drove this acquisition to completion. I look forward to seeing everyone at BrainShare. I miss working on GroupWise and with our great customers and partners. Sent to you by Brando via Google Reader: They're Bluffing, Linus Taunts via OpenSUSE Linux Rants by Scott Morris on 2/4/08 Linus Torvalds believes that users of Linux have nothing to fear. M$ is bluffing. According to Linus: "They have been sued for patents by other people, but I don't think they've -- not that I've gone through any huge amount of law cases -- but I don't think they've generally used patents as a weapon," Torvalds said. "But they're perfectly happy to use anything at all as fear, uncertainty and doubt in the marketplace, and patents is just one thing where they say, 'Hey, isn't this convenient? We can use this as a PR force.'" Boy, one thing that I've always said, and it's truer now than ever, is that M$ is a marketing company, not a software company. They understand people and how they respond and react to things. They will push the very bounds of what's legal in order to intimidate and influence people. What's funny is that your average person wants someone else to tell them what to do. Many people like to give away their power to choose. They don't want the responsibility of thinking for themselves, and it's too much effort anyway. Anyway, it's nice to see people starting to break out of that and turn their back on M$. Many governments are doing that around the world. By now you've likely heard that the French Police dumped Windows on 70,000 machines for Ubuntu Linux. I think that's the biggest migration I've ever heard of. Think outside the box. Learn something. Don't be afraid of the Big Bad Wolf. Go Linux. We will review the Grand Unified Bootloader (GRUB) boot menu and running your computer functions plus HDTV on one screen. As always, you are encouraged to use Linux as your operating system since Linux is much more secure and more affordable than proprietary software and the best solution for home or office use. You can run Linux on all off-the-shelf standard hardware from new back to approx. Pentium I. The goal is to get you started or advanced with Linux. We are Linux distribution neutral and try out all sorts of Linux distributions. Our focus is to get all proprietary Windows and Mac users switched to open source Linux. We encourage trying out different Linux distributions since they all bring new ideas to the community. ___________________________________________ -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= www.psnug.org Puget Sound Network Users Group Building Technical Skills Through Teamwork And Education. LFNW08: Announcement of OLPC -One Laptop Per Child- XO Laptop presentation track, vendor table, dedicated presentation/learning lab area. (Iain (FreeGeek) Davidson) From: "Iain (FreeGeek) Davidson" ( I wanted to officially announce some news for LinuxFest Northwest 2008 ) I have been working diligently behind the scenes to help the presence of One Laptop per Child (OLPC) and XO Laptops at this year's upcoming LinuxFest Northwest 2008 -- http://LinuxFestNorthWest.org/ Carrying forward from last year's Jessie's excellent (and very well attended) Red Hat / OLPC presentation [1] , momentum and awareness of OLPC has increased exponentially. With the initial public release in November of the XO Laptop to mass production. Limited fund raising event of the Give 1 Get 1 [2] program from November to December, created over 80,000 orders in 6 weeks. Which in turn started sending 'gift' XO Laptop first round installations into countries (and children's hands) such as *Mongolia, Haiti, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Cambodia,* and *Afghanistan. * Online resources for OLPC / XO Laptop is also growing quickly, with great overviews on http://laptop.org , and 5000+ pages of information on * http://wiki.laptop.org* including specific pages for support related questions via http://support.laptop.org . Huge growing XO Laptop presence in Seattle [3] and other Pacific Northwest areas, volunteer community based support and repair shops popping up in several locations throughout Washington and Oregon, and the rest of the nation. Exciting stuff to be sure, especially in the realm of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), XO Laptop focus is 100% open source [4] ! ! ! In respect to the* Linuxfest Northwest 2008 conference*, several things. . . . So far there has been enough presenters and volunteers stepping forward, that the LFNW event organizers have given a green light and background support for... o A specific OLPC / XO Laptop presentation track ! o A dedicated vendors table for OLPC information and XO Laptop demonstration o A specific dedicated room for presentations, discussions, and learning lab environment. o Special coordination with Robotics and Solar/alternative energy presentation tracks with locations nearby ! Several special and very active OLPC community supporters have confirmed attendance too. . . * Mel Chua (mchua) - http://wiki.laptop.org/go/User:Mchua OLPC Jam organizer [5], Google Summer of Code receiptent for 2007, XO Laptop repair shop coordinator, Wiki editor, IRC support, etc (A tip-of-the-hat to Candela Technologies Inc http://www.candelatech.com , for covering the costs to fly her in from the *eastcoast *area) * Seth Woodworth (isforinsects) - http://wiki.laptop.org/go/User:Sethwoodworth OLPC organizer of public documents/media, learning materials, images, and other resources, also developer, support volunteer. Weekly Zine editor * Iain Davidson (ixo) - (oh, that's me:) http://wiki.laptop.org/go/User:Ixo OLPC Grassroots, support volunteer, wiki editor, Weekly Zine founder, IRC support, Activity developer, and volunteer XO repair shop. BTW, the interest by LFNW08 for OLPC/XO Laptop has also helped to create another OLPC Health Jam [6] event as part of the Health conference in Seattle ! (And hope to see the results of this event, presented at LFNW too ! ) We still have many *opportunities still available* for LFNW volunteers, and hoping to increase presence and awareness even further. * Presentations about OLPC / XO Laptop experiences * Implementation * Development * Hardware * Software * Personal experiences with developing countries and what can be done to help. * Alternative methods for powering equipment (solar, wind, generator, etc...) * A conference vendor to run a XS Server or centralized 'OLPC jabberd' server for special conference networking, mesh, or sharing demonstrations. * Help assist with learning lab environment, and presentations * Offering other items for the auction, or encourage vendors to exhibit ! Please visit the LinuxFest Northwest 2008, website for further information, or check out the starting OLPC wiki page for the latest.... ( http://wiki.laptop.org/go/LinuxFest_Northwest_2008 ) Especially, please *bring OLPC / XO Laptops* to the conference, to help demonstrate the power of mesh networking and sharing activities ! (Many free WiFi hotspots throughout Bellingham, and (likely) during the conference.... even several T-Mobile locations :) I am very excited to see this come to fruition, hope to see you and many XO Laptops there ! -Iain Davidson (aka ixo , on OLPC support-gang, irc #olpc-help , #olpc and email lists: grassroots, support-gang, developer, help etc.) p.s. That would make a great end-user topic because anybody considering a switch to Linux would feel more comfortable knowing that the same program ran on either. For this category of people, a side by side comparison of programs would be excellent, i.e. here's Office and here's OpenOffice. The topic would also be good for software developers. There have to be some Windows programmers who'd like to know what tools and processes are used to make cross-platform applications. I haven't used a Windows machine since 1994, but as a developer, I'd still be interested in what it takes to design a program that would work on Windows as well as Linux. The Opensource community has done a remarkable job of writing programs that run on Linux and perform similarly or the same as Windows apps. I don't know how well it has done writing new apps that run on either, but that seems to me a good way to infiltrate a Windows machine. At some point the Window's user has to ask why they are spending money on an upgrade when all their apps run on Linux. David Smead www.amplepower.com ------------------------------------- From: Jakob Perry Dave: At techtonic I plan to a presentation close to what you describe. I'll be using both windows and OSX to show off open source applications. Carl will then be showing them all running on linux. I think I'll be doing another presentation at linuxfest, but I could give presentation notes from techtonic to anyone who might want to do such a presentation at linuxfest. ~Jakob Perry JADE Microsystems japerry at jademicrosystems.com Cell: 360-739-6709 AIM: japerry007 ------------------------------ From: Mark Ashworth Dave Smead wrote: > I haven't used a Windows machine since 1994, but as a developer, I'd still be interested in what it takes to design a program that would work on Windows as well as Linux. I'm in the ZENworks business too. It's remarkable that no (!) Windows Vista deployments are executed. And I mean none. I checked with other Novell partners over here and there it's the same. Just deploying Windows XP with ZEN imaging and ENGL, doing MSI repackaging, training and consultancy is only what's being asked for and is a very good busines. But Vista: no. When I did a ZCM/ZEN10 session for about 150 people a couple of months ago with Ron van Herk, read his blogs on Cool blogs if you don't who he is, we asked a couple of questions on Vista. No one (partners, small and big customers were in the audience) is doing anything with Vista at the moment. No one. No plans after the release of SP1 either. I've never seen that before. Last week a Dutch journalist pinged me whether I know any (!) customer deploying Windows Vista or who had deployed Vista. He had been looking for days and even Microsoft could not point out any (!) customer to him. >From a software packaging perspective it's a big task to check every single software package for Vista compliancy. E.g. COM registration works very different on Vista. And many applications still use COM and will use COM for a long time. So organization aren't looking forward to that either. Last time I worked with a 500 user company migrating from Windows 2000 to XP, it took them a year to check their apps and they're very skilled and good equipped. > It will be interesting to see what happens with the June > 30th deadline for Windows XP Indeed. Over here people already started talking about Windows 7 / Vienna and probably will wait for that since rumors are Microsoft will speed up because of Vista and deliver it in 2009. Some don't want to wait at all, don't see that as an alternative at all and start looking at alternatives. Which is good. Choose is good. Just so you know my bias - I bought Toshiba Laptop a year ago Feb 07. +1 gig RAM 1.6GHz Intel processor Vista so slow, I put openSUSE for a dual boot, and haven't used vista since last June, just too painfully slow. WARNING - I only spent half a day trying to remove all 3rd party programs I thought might be slowing things down. I just didn't want to spend any more time, nor purchase software, trying to find tune up tricks for Vista. I just upgraded from 10.2 to 10.3 and it is even FASTER than before - I know that MS only users will not believe an upgrade actually improves performance, but it really did. You probably don't recall but about 10 years ago Apple, IBM and a few others had a nearly-successful spec called opendoc. Rather than build 'one application to rule them all' a simple framework held components that did specific jobs - spell check, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc. VERY powerful and potentially a revolution in software where the data was king. The problem was that applets were so easy to write it didn't take a software house to do so, a single programmer could release a module that was every bit as good as one provided by Apple, IBM - or Microsoft. The mix&match nature made it easy for the user to grab what they wanted, and the software was cheap because it was easy to write and had real market competition. Naturally the big software houses stayed away in droves because there was little profit compared to releasing a monolithic program. Point is, the specs were rather simple. If a single programmer could handle an applet that resulted in this kind of rich document, why is the Office file spec so complex? Message-ID: <609b18560802201732r36996a8eg3bfc4d185a310bd1@mail.gmail.com> From: "Rodney Bliss" Subject: RE: [ngw] Re: GW Market Share I really depends on how you see your role: customer or partner. (BTW, I'm not on Novell's payroll and never have been.) *Partners:* Many, many people on this list fit the classic definition of partner. We make money from GroupWise. Some manufacture and market complementary products, some of us are consultants that get paid to help people install and use the product. As a migration consultant, the more people move to GroupWise, the more jobs I get. I definitely have a stake in how well GW does. It could be said that in the past partners have done the bulk of GW marketing. GroupWise Advisor magazine was started not because of what Novell was doing, but because the editor saw what a vibrant and passionate partner community existed. Now that Novell is taking a more active role in promoting GroupWise, the partner community needs to step up and make sure that the marketing and evangelism efforts have the most impact possible. *Customers:* If GW were like laundry soap, ... No matter how much you like Tide detergent, you have not a whit of responsibility to help promote it. If Tide stops meeting your needs, you'll easily switch to some other brand and probably not even notice the difference. But email is not like soap. It's not like most consumer commodities. It gets used BY FAR more than any other business application. GroupWise users have tips, tricks, tweaks, etc that help them to get their job done better. The ones I might use are different than the ones you might use. But, I have never seen an experienced GW user who was willing to dump the client. Most have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the Microsoft Exchange world. (Oh, yeah, I was on the payroll for Microsoft for 9 years, and their customers DO NOT love them nearly as much as GW customers love GW.) So, if you are one of the customers who love GW, you have a vested interest in making sure it remains a viable product. The obituary for GroupWise has been written at least twice that I know of. It's not inevitable that GW will stick around. I worked for WordPerfect for 5 years and while I got out 6 months before Novell bought them, I watched a product that people LOVED wither and die. The same CAN happen to GroupWise. There are a few hundred people working for Novell responsible for GroupWise. There are a few thousand partners. There are millions of users. In today's viral-marketing/Internet environment numbers matter. One of the biggest reasons companies are pressured to move off of GW is the misperception that GW is dead ? no one is using it ? Novell doesn't care about it. Sure Novell can (and should) work to change that perception. But, the people who depend on GW everyday to get their jobs done have some responsibility too. Here in Washington state, Ron Paul won over 20% of the vote. His entire campaign is built around word-of-mouth marketing mostly over the Internet. That type of viral marketing works. Richard understands the power that the GW community holds. I think it's **we ** who don't understand it. ... if the GW community fails get excited about promoting GW, don't be surprised when analysts, reporters or your company executives also fail to get excited. After all, if the people using it NOW aren't fired up about it, what makes you think people evaluating it will be? -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= www.psnug.org Puget Sound Network Users Group Building Technical Skills Through Teamwork And Education. (NSS) volumes located on different devices, and transparently provides a unified view of the file tree to users. You specify policies that classify data to be moved by its frequency of use, filename, file type, and file size. Policy enforcement is automated with scheduled and on-demand runs of the policies. DST allows you to seamlessly tier storage between high-performance and lower-performance devices. For example, you can establish policies that keeps frequently-used mission-critical data on high-performance devices, and moves seldom-used less-essential data to lower-performance devices. Backup can be performed separately on the two volumes, which allows for different backup schedules. DST just one add-on you can use with NSS volumes http://www.novell.com/documentation/oes2/storage.html#storage -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= www.psnug.org Puget Sound Network Users Group Building Technical Skills Through Teamwork And Education. (NSS) file system provides location transparency of file data to end users. With DFS, you can create a single virtual file system for data on NSS volumes that spans multiple machines to maximize the use and performance of storage resources. *1.1.1 Data Distribution* DFS preserves the logical file organization from the user perspective by maintaining a Volume Location Database (VLDB) for all volumes in a DFS management context. When you move an NSS volume to a new volume in a different pool, the VLDB helps redirect queries to the new location. When you split an NSS volume to relocate a directory's data to a newly created NSS volume, DFS places a junction file in place of the directory at the source location. The junction contains a hint about the destination location of the data. When a user attempts to access the data, DFS uses that information to look up the location of the destination volume in the VLDB, then automatically redirects queries so that the session connection can be made transparently from the user's point of view by going directly to the data. After the connection is made, the junction itself is no longer involved in the session. Using junctions and the VLDB eliminates the user's need to know the path to the physical location of the data. Not only does it decrease administration costs by allowing you to move a volume to a different server without making any announcements or needing to reeducate users, but it also simplifies the number of paths a user needs to remember if the data is spread among different volumes or servers. For example, if John's data is located on servers X, Y, and Z, you can create junctions on server X that point to all of his data on servers Y and Z. That way, John only needs to remember the path to server X, because with junctions, it appears as if the data is all located in one place. 1.1.2 Backup DFS provides a solution to the common problem of storage volumes growing too big to back up within the desired or required time period. A too-large volume can be split into two (or more) volumes, and the resulting volumes backed up separately as required. You can split a volume at any directory to a new NSS volume without changing the logical path to files. You and your users can continue to use the logical paths when mapping network drives or creating login scripts. The physical location of data can change over time, and that change is completely transparent to the end user. 1.1.3 Data Migration DFS can also provide a migration path for customers moving NSS volumes from NetWare(R) 6.5 or OES NetWare to OES 2 Linux. The Move Volume task for DFS can be used to move file data on NSS volumes from NetWare servers to OES 2 Linux servers. This allows you to gradually move data to an OES 2 Linux environment, without committing to a turnkey change of operating environment. http://www.novell.com/documentation/oes2/storage.html#storage -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= www.psnug.org Puget Sound Network Users Group Building Technical Skills Through Teamwork And Education. Message-ID: <341656B5-85A2-4BA7-98D8-8A3F4C4063D0@comcast.net> A friend forwarded this to me. Go on, read it all the way through. I'll wait: http://audience-av.com/powerchord/ OK, how many saw the snake oil? All of you? That's amazing! Seriously, this brings up something common in the tech arenas - the snow job. Most people don't have sufficient background in technology to spot bad science like this. Most of us can at least spot snake oil - if we are sufficiently suspicious. As an example, how about the new favorite fault tolerant system - Virtual Servers? Often advertised as systems that 'never go down' like any other system they still retain single points of failure. The host systems can be clustered (and usually are), multi-path switching used, redundant controllers on the SAN, but how about the code? An error in the SAN support system can cause failure (I witnessed this just last week), worms and other malware can infect the hosted systems - or even the host OS. Yes, there are already warnings about keeping code up to date on your ESX system to prevent exploits. Even something as prosaic as disk corruption on the virtual (or physical) data volumes can bring services down. I'm not advocating a return to simpler systems. We need to take a page from science and apply peer review. It's a rough, somewhat adversarial process where your peers try to find problems in your best work. We need to take another page from the Discovery channel's Mythbusters! gang and TEST. (Sorry, no explosions though.) Finally, let's steal an attitude from CSI - that's Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, not the silly crime show - and question assumptions. Or we can all start buying overpriced power cables. I can't count the times I have heard misinformed advice to 'only go to websites that are trusted'. While frequenting some black hat sites increases the likelihood of infection it appears that pornographic sites are most commonly infected 'trusted' sites, even those of security experts are not immune. The best current advice I have heard is to be cautious and skeptical, use malware protection and avoid a monoculture environment. Oh, and keep up to date on security news. Gartner Group forecasts that by 2011 Apple will double it's market share; currently at 8% (up from 2% in 1997) the projected 16% is a significant portion of the market. My own recommendation is that IT professionals plan for a mixed environment - certainly for anything facing customers. The recent release of the iPhone SDK and announced support of Exchange (iPhone has 28% of smartphone sales in it's first year, this will only increase the penetration) is likely to fuel another Gartner prediction - that half of traveling workers will leave their laptops behind in favor of more mobile devices. Here's a link to the full article: http://gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=593207 The reason for increased penetration is significant: "Apple's gains in computer market share reflect as much on the failures of the rest of the industry as on Apple's success. Apple is challenging its competitors with software integration that provides ease of use and flexibility; continuous and more frequent innovation in hardware and software; and an ecosystem that focuses on interoperability across multiple devices (such as iPod and iMac cross- selling)." I find this compelling based on a recent survey (published in Macworld, if anyone is interested I'll find a link) that shows user satisfaction with the latest version of OS X is 81%; XP is at 53% and Vista a miserable 17% (depending on version). Some of this may be Apple's famed diehard user base but the possibility is vanishingly small that this is the entire (or even major) cause. We introduce the 0-day patch rate as a new metric; being the number of patches a vendor is able to release at the day of the public disclosure of a new vulnerability. Say you have 20 cve's, and you patch 15 right away. But the last 5 languish for 6 months. The other company has 20 also, patched 10 right away. But gets to the other 10 in 6 weeks. Which is "better". The window of vulnerability is much larger in the first case. I think the study focused on 'zero-day patches' because it was easy to quantify. Studies that I've seen that try to quantify the 'window of vulnerability' were all fairly weak, it's a difficult question to answer. An old statistical problem- counting what you can, not what you need. I can't argue with the sentiment that all the vendors need to work harder on security. And I won't be giving up my macs yet, nor my windows (except maybe vista). ross On Mar 28, 2008, at 4:29 PM, Randy Grein wrote: > http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9072498&source=NLT_SEC&nlid=38 > > Disturbing news. Having heard the claims of recoverability my own analysis matches Eric's own - a combination of misunderstanding, marketing and uberspy posturing. Those who are destroying computers rather than using an overwrite tool may want to reconsider.
